News – Wii Worries

General

Nintendo is considering pulling adverts for the Wii because they’re struggling to meet demand. For the time being, they don’t need to advertise. In fact, just before I found this article a coworker came up to ask me about the Wii and getting one, which was amusing. Fortunately there are 5 stores within walking distance to check, hopefully he’ll get one for his grandkids to enjoy. On a side note, if you’ve waited this long to get one for Xmas.. why?

Scientists are working on putting sensors into bras to let them adjust for a better fit. For the purpose of aiding active women who are more amply endowed than the comfortable average.

For the first time ever on film, the long-eared Jerboa. Amazingly, the story(just posted today) is already linked off Wikipedia. It might not be the best resource ever, but the people that update it work fast indeed.

Looking back at the Commodore 64. How far we’ve come in so short a time. From simple 8 color games to the majesty of Half Life 2 and its vistas(HL2 being one of my current obsessions).

The Blogs look at news that the CIA destroyed video tapes depicting interrogations of terrorists and Israel hoping to convince the Pentagon that the National Intelligence Estimate is deeply flawed.

Today’s Papers has news that former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has decided that his party will participate in next month’s parliamentary elections, the backlog of appeals for Social Security disability, news that the police are investigating whether two separate shootings at religious institutions in Colorado were related and more in the one page news.

Middle East

Association for Civil Rights, an Israeli civil rights group, says that anti-Arab racism is on the rise against Arab citizens in Israel. No doubt recent potential peace moves as well as the lingering sad state of the region contribute to that rise. They might not teach suicide bombing and the like, but Israel does little to promote a balanced view of their Arab neighbors.

Iran sends a formal protest letter to the US over its spying on their nuclear activities. No doubt the US is doing everything it can to spy on what Iran’s up to.

The UN warns returning Iraqis that the country remains insecure. Which is true enough. Less violence doesn’t necessarily mean safety. Iraq isn’t quite stable yet, but one can hope that such a state manifests soon.

The UN is moving into Iraq again. Hopefully violence can be kept down to keep them in there and working.

Africa

Zimbabwe prez Robert Mugabe promotes political talks to prepare for elections next year as heralding the ‘dawn of a new era’. The opposition says don’t you believe it. Apparently factional violence hasn’t ended, which would make one wonder.

Asia/Pacific

Tickets for the next Olympics are already out on the black market. So check your discreet contacts if you want one of those choice seats and have $5k to lay down for the privilege. A 12 times over mark up.

Europe

Kosovo sets ahead their planned unilateral declaration of independence to May, should talks fail. Well, there is the school of thought that it’s better to get the mess over with as soon as possible rather than putting it off.

The UN prods Burma for faster reforms. I agree, but with no one giving them reasons to change, little wonder they’re not exactly snapping to and getting their house in order.

America

Oprah campaigns for Obama. I dunno about anyone else, but her seal of approval doesn’t really give me warm fuzzies. Then again, I’ve never really cared for Oprah.

The Justice Department and the CIA are looking into why two CIA tapes of terror suspect interrogations were destroyed. To be honest, I don’t know that I trust the CIA To look into their own issue. Or the Justice Department to be honest. But I’ll reserve judgment until I see what they come up with.

Robo-Calls, the latest in annoying political BS. Link in article with a site that looks like it was set up to demand an opt out.

The Army Field Manual’s tidbits on allowable interrogation techniques.

BTW, my nephew who is a video game junkir and was quite stocky is as thin as a rail now. I’m not sure if it’s that he’s growing up or the result of the Wii.
