News – Pushing Syria Again

I thought we’d already covered this, but apparently not.

Iraq

The US is alleging again that Syria is allowing militants to cross its borders into Iraq. Given this administration’s tendency toward spin, I won’t be believing this until I see the hard proof. Sorry Bush, you reap what you sew.

When getting the power up in Iraq is the cornerstone of plans for reconstruction, every week that passes without it is painful. Will it be years before reliable services can be restored to Iraq? For the people who live there, I surely hope not.

Israel/Palestine

The US has vetoed the UN resolution to block any assassination attempts against Arafat. And once again Arab leaders are sure to get pissed at us. Bush and company needs to pick their battles of words and not be inflexible on everything that might bring about a modicum sanity to global struggles.

Arafat remains unfazed.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher has paid down some condemnation on both sides of the coin. Specifically, he said Palestinian resistance was fine, but the killing of civilians and children was not.

The Israeli army’s got budget cut blues. It will ground much of their air force and leave their army at its weakest in 30 years. And I can’t muster a bit of sympathy. All I can think is, no more f-16 missile strikes in the middle of civilian packed areas of Palestine. Second thought? Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if they hadn’t fired so many rockets and missiles into the country. That’s costly stuff. Maybe they should take the mutual ceasefire offer.

US

Retired Gen. Wesley Clark, a former NATO commander, is entering the presidential race under the democratic ticket. He sounds like, despite his late entry, he has quite a few things going for him, including military service(obviously) and southern roots.

Cheney’s appeal is going to the Supreme Court. He’s really going to be kicking himself in the ass if they uphold the previous verdicts, cause this only makes him look like he’s hiding something.

Condi backpedals for the Bush administration, saying that they never said Saddam directed the 9/11 attacks. Your playing with words, chickie. You might not have said he directed them, but you and the boys have said just about everything else without adequate evidence to that fact.

Judge Moore is offering his Ten Commandments monument for Congress for display. He just doesn’t get it, does he? I’d be surprised if anything takes it, considering what trouble it has put Moore’s career into.

The senate has voted to undo the recent FCC media rules changes. They obviously fear fatter media conglomerates more than a White House veto.

Did Karl Rove break a CIA agent’s cover? Of course, the White House wont’ say, but we’re free to speculate.

Judith Miller plays up a leak of Undersecretary of State John Bolton’s testimony on Syria’s unconventional weapons program to be given today. Do we believe her spin on it this time?

Will Wesley Clark make a good stand in his running for president, using the sure thing of peace seeking general image? Better yet if it isn’t an image.

Whopper of the Week: John Ashcroft – “No one believes in our First Amendment civil liberties more than this administration.”

Sure, tell us another one Ashy.

The Flip Flops of Bob Graham: This focuses on his apparent flipping on tat cut repeal, revealed as him neglecting to differentiate between his positions on the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts when he speaks. Though he does hold his opponents to a shifting standard.

Today’s Papers looks at Hurricane Isabel, 4,400 ‘security detainees'(Enemy combatant’s little brother, it seems) in Iraq, South Korea leaning toward sending 10k troops to Iraq, contrary info as to who is most dangerous to us in Iraq and more.

Day to Day: Today there is a look at the ‘Do not call list’ and the telecommunications industry saying it will harm the economy. Our talker is dubious and he’ll tell you why.

Have you ever noted, Ren, that every bit of unrest/military action (War) out there seems to be based on some difference in Religious ideal? I can’t help but think back to my college courses in Cultural Anthropology, where the professor presented religion as first a reaction to the fear of death (once early humans had figured out what death was..) and then as a purely political body aimed at (con)

advancing the views of one body of peoples over those of another. Interesting though, that no war was ever fought to advance the beliefs of Druids or Pagans, or to quell their ‘enemies’ who would preach something counter to their beliefs. In fact, the only ‘wars’ fought by these groups were wars of survival when the Romans and then Christians fought to destroy them, and their beliefs, (con’t)

mercilessly slaughtering all but those who became nominally members of the “ruling class'” religions in order to survive. Just a passing thought, as I scanned your list of “News”.
