The Washington Times reports that three Americans held hostage in the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran say that ultra-conservative President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was a key player in the event. Two who were involved in the incident deny such allegations.

Lebanon’s parliament has chosen Fouad Siniora, anti-Syrian former finance minister, to be the Prime Minister of the country’s first Syria-free government.

Israel is starting to move to cut off rightist Israelis from executing their planned resistances to the pullout from Gaza. Likely a good idea, to keep any.. unfortunate incidents from occurring.

Africa

Somali gunmen hijack a ship transporting 850 tons of World Food Program rice for Somali tsunami survivors. They’re demanding $500,000 ransom for the ten-person crew.

North America

The Senate votes against easing travel restrictions for Americans to Cuba. They also approve $1.5 billion in emergency funds for veteran health care, to pay for the rising cost of Iraq war injuries and illnesses of aging veterans from past wars. Aaaand.. they cut $1.25 billion from Bush’s Millennium Challenge Account.

Another plane slip into restricted airspace, causing.. what, the third false alarm this year? I guess those flashing lights aren’t working.

Focus remains on erecting that Freedom Tower. I maintain that there are better uses for the land, including a memorial for those who desire such a thing.

Nielson Media Research says that Bush’s latest speech drew the lowest audience in his career. Likely because most(as I did) expected he wouldn’t say anything new.

Wasn’t it wonderful that we put Republicans in charge of congress in 1994 when they promised term limits and salary caps? Where are those term limits and salary caps? Gone. Not one of the promised reforms passed the senate. Now, to be fair the CWA only promised that the co-signees would vote on all 10 but, as far as I know not one item passed as promised.

About 20% of those who promised to limit themselves to two terms actually followed through. We did get a balanced budget (from Congress, though Clinton claims all the credit. Terrible national news media coverage continues to give him credit for this though he would never have done it if not forced by Republican House.) Welfare reform was about the same. Oh well, raises all round.
