News – No Accounting for Self Preservation

We humans are a collection of crazy nuts. That’s for sure.

General

A man went over Niagara Falls yesterday without a barrel. And survived. That would make him the first person known to have survived going over the falls without safety equipment. He’s now in police custody, facing thousands of dollars in fines.

Why was a portion of Roy Horn’s skull removed and inserted in his stomach? As part of a procedure to help alleviate brain swelling. Read the details in the article. Its quite interesting.

Today’s Papers says US officials think Khalid Shaikh Mohammed killed Danny Pearl. They didn’t say why they believe this, but we can’t expect they would. There is also skepticism on Iran’s promises and other news.

Iraq

Singapore will be sending troops, ships and planes to Iraq. They didn’t say how many, but some heavy gear is being sent.

The CPA and Iraqi officials are preparing to arrest Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr over suspected involvement in the murder of a rival cleric, Abdel Majid al-Khoei, in April.

Israel/Palestine

A UN resolution condemning the wall they’re building and demanding the project’s halt has been summarily ignored by Israel. So they’re in violation of resolutions.. time for the US to invade, right? Have to give weight to all UN resolutions, don’t we? If we let Israel get away with defying the UN, then why should any other country give a damn?

A barrage of missiles and mortars were fired at targets inside and outside of Gaza in response to Israel’s strikes in Palestine. Support rises for Arafat(according to a poll and you know about them) and some Israeli press questions the lack of questioning on the ‘rightness’ of Israel’s attacks in Palestine.

Tunnels unearthed below a Nazareth souvenir shop could hold a discovery that could dramatically rewrite Christian history. But the shops owner has found little help from the usual suspects in unearthing it.

The latest Iraq analogy out of the White House? Comparing Iraq to the Philippines.

Korea

The US offer of security assurances is called laughable. Korea wants a bilateral treaty with the US. Considering Bush has no desire to invade Korea(supposedly), I don’t see why he won’t agree to that.

US

The battle continues over a woman who has been in a vegetative state for 13 years. She had her feeding tube removed by court order a few days ago by her husband who said she wouldn’t want to live this way. The tube has been ordered reinserted after legislation was just passed allowing Jeb Bush to order it so. To the delight of her parents who don’t want her to die. So who has the say in this? Her husband and legal guardian or her parents?

If congress insists on making part of the 87 billion he wants into loans, Bush’ll veto his own bill. Which will be productive, I’m sure, considering the delay as a new bill is formed up.

The ban on partial birth abortions has been approved by the Senate and is on the way to be signed. So now the battle over it will move to the courts.

USA Today leaks a supposed memo from Rumsfeld which isn’t as upbeat as his speeches tend to be. Is this the real deal?

That one about Iraq and the Philippines is unnerving.

That’s not true. A boy went over Niagara Falls and survived many years ago.

October 22, 2003

I heard about the boy going over when I was at the falls myself two Summers ago (when I heard about it, not when it happened), but they are saying he had on a life jacket and that is the difference.

Good news for those who believe we should error on the side of the right to live over the right to let die for both the Florida woman and partial birth abortion issues. Regarding the “loan” provision stuck in the 87 $billion$ bill, by senate Democrats: How much more obivious attempt could there be to worsen the situation in Iraq to embarrass Bush? Sickening.

October 22, 2003

These Senate Democrats didn’t have the guts or foresight to oppose war last Fall. They want to rewrite history by making it look like Bush is charging the Iraqi people (out of their oil revenue) for the war. Bush is not that stupid. Even the press has been pointing out this transparent politicizing. The bill may have to be rewritten and passed all over again, but it will be.
