Looks like the world’s view on the US is improving. Personally, I’d term it returning to what it once was, which is good at least. Last thing we need is to maintain a loss of influence in the word. Question is, just what is prompting a slow return?

Cuba lifts restrictions on mobile phone use amongst the people. An interesting, but relatively minor concession on behalf of the new Cuban government. The services will still have to be paid for in foreign currency, restricting use to wealthier Cubans.

Middle East

The death toll on Iraqis has climbed upward again. Whether a blip or the resumption of a trend will be determined.

The youth riot in Yemen for not being allowed in the military and tanks are deployed to help stay the violence. Though it seems the violence has been on the light side.

A woman living in Sderot and another living in Gaza exchange letters via the BBC.

Iraqi government forces move against Mahdi militants in Basra. And British forces, it seems, will be lingering longer in part.

Remember Israeli corporal Gilad Shalit? Captured two years ago and still held by Hamas, the head of the group said today that the man is still alive.

Africa

While the polls are not official yet, the opposition is claiming victory in Zimbabwe’s recently presidential election. There is some obvious concern at the delay in the official ruling. Things could get ugly if fraud enters into the equation.

Asia/Pacific

Amnesty International says that having the Olympics is making rights worse in China, rather than better. That they’re clamping down on dissent to portray a more stable, unified image.

North Korea continues to make things difficult. The US negotiator is looking for action in the next few days. Hopefully he won’t be disappointed.

Europe

An EU court rules to allow a gay man to have the pension of his late life partner.

Gordon Brown says that immigration is good for the UK and won’t be placing an annual cap on it.

Greece and Macedonian have a light set of issues two days before Macedonian is set to be voted on as a new member of NATO. A poster with a defaced Greek flag being the centerpiece, which Greece is pissed about and Macedonian is distancing itself from, though not dealing with under the guise of free speech.

General

A UK study suggests that common Anti-psychotic drugs given to Alzheimer’s patients could make the condition worse.

Scientists are finding out how to regenerate damaged teeth rather than having to drill and fill them. This is a pretty bold advance. Especially if it can be done cheaply in time. Still not close to full tooth regeneration, but filling gaps and holes in this manner is a strong step towards such a lofty goal.
