News – Catch the Cast
General
Slate’s Podcast round up. What’s that? Podcasts are great ways to get access to free(and subscription) content for your MP3 player. Get audio feeds downloaded from Slate, Cspan and other news sites as well as recordings of radio shows, the Presidents Daily briefs and others, including homebrew content. Personally, I get them off iTunes as it has a nicely organized directory of scads of Podcasts, most of which are free to download. Once you’ve used a piece of software to subscribe, you can download updates to the files with ease. Soon I’ll have to get a bigger iPod with all the stuff I’ve been downloading for future listening. Give it a try, you might find something you like.
Nintendogs is cute and addictive, so say many who have played it. I’ve not done more than toy with a demo copy for five minutes, but I’d wager that most dog lovers would be recommended to look into it for a good time with the Nintendo DS.
The Internet and DVDs could spell the end of CDs. Obviously, as DVD is a better media. Just like floppy, CD will have to give way to better, just as in time DVD will also fall to the latest in stable removable media storage. This could me great things for music, with interactive music DVDs that have scads of room for extra content to tempt buyers.
Today’s Papers has more info on potential Justice Roberts, the price of oil(and by relation, gas) rising as Katrina forces oil rigs in the Gulf to shut down, the mandatory evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people from New Orleans and more in the one page news.
Middle East
Iraq finally has a draft constitution, though it seems Sunni’s don’t take to the text that was turned out. Considering the majority Shia and Kurds finally decided to ignore the objections of their representatives, one can see why. This likely means the coming referendum isn’t so sure a thing. Bush, of course, thumbs up the charter and plays down Sunni opposition, while also covering his ass for the inevitable violence during the referendum. Means the terrorists are desperate and losing, of course. Not that US and Iraqi forces are being less than effective in reducing the deadliness such groups have maintained.
Another suicide bombing attempt in Israel. Fortunately, it was waylaid. Pity that these people continue to complicate matters with needless violence. Abbas needs to separate himself from those elements that are working counter to what is best for the region.
Now that the pullout is done, Bush is on the Palestinians to crackdown on terrorism. Mind you, I don’t recall any note of serious help(save for money), to guide them in how.
Reuters loses another employee in Iraq and another is wounded. The two men, who were Iraqis, were shot at by US forces according to Iraqi police sources. The wounded cameraman is currently being held and questioned because of “inconsistencies in his initial testimony.” Reuters wants their man released.
North America
Louisiana could be feeling a hard bite from Hurrican Katrina, which has managed to slip up to Category 5 status. Not a good thing for a place where a major city is below sea level.
California Attorney General Bill Lockyer files suit to force potato chip and French fry makers to include info on their products of potential cancer causing ingredients.
The FBI raids the Maryland residence of Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar as part of an investigation on whether a U.S. congressman made or approved payments to officials in West Africa.
