News – Alert for Women. Lay off Tuna

US

The FDA and EPA are drafting a warning for women to limit tuna consumption. Due to fears of mercury poisoning concerns, pregnant women, nursing mothers and woman of child bearing age should limit their intake of tuna and shellfish to 12 ounces a week at most.

Colorado has been hit hard by the flu thus far. As of late the number of cases has leapt by 1000 in a week and another child has died, none in all now. It’s believed that the flu is peaking there, however. Lets hope so.

A rough shod, if thought provoking musing of the ‘greedy’ elderly of the day and the current Medicare plan. Look past the mild insults in use of dodgy terms and muse the future impact.

Organized protests by Labor Unions are meant to show solidarity against Bush’s policies.

Environmentalists are suing the US Forest Service over a plan that they say threatens to open up sections of Alaska’s Tongass National Forest to clear cut logging. The lawsuit says the six year old plan for the forest was based on flawed information with exaggerated demand for the forests timber.

Nope, former Judge Roy Moore hasn’t given up yet. He’s filing an appeal to get his job back. Never mind the big ass rock for now. He claims he was following the Alabama and US constitution when he defied a US District Court order to have the rock removed. Uh huh..

A poll finds most Americans support the UN, except amongst republicans, where the percentage drops. For what polls are worth, of course.

Bush’s Mel “Mr. Cellophane” Martinez is leaving HUD to run for a vacated Florida senate seat. Why is he Mr. Cellophane? Read the article, find out and chuckle.

Iraq

The EU is still sharp on the USs decision to restrict contracts to it’s small cluster of allies in Iraq. They’re going to see if this violates the WTOs rules. Reactions of individual countries have been predictable. What they were doing with regard to Iraq is now stalled. Russia will not forgive Iraq’s debts and Canada has threatened to withdraw the money is’ pumped into rebuilding, for example.

Three more suspects captured in Tikrit. Another haul of small arms seized. So many suspects, but so very little noted of ‘convictions’ if they exist over there.

Israel/Palestine

For once an explosion on Israeli soil wasn’t caused by a suicide bomber. Apparently some criminally related violence that killed three and wounded 19 others.

Israel’s Supreme Court has ordered Ariel Sharon’s son to hand over documents in the fraud inquiry that some think could lead Sharon to resign. With our luck, he’d be replaced by someone worse.

China

China appreciates that Bush likes the status quo between it and Taiwan. The president of Taiwan wants a referendum on whether to stick with China or go it alone. China is determined that Taiwan will remain ‘part’ of it, by force if necessary. If it comes to blows, who will the US back? I can see why Bush wants the status quo, from a practical standpoint at the very least.

General

Canadian psychologists have proven what the world has suspected all along. Pretty women do make men act irrationally.

Day to Day has the Militart’s Get-Tough Approach and the Phil Spector Murder Case.

Today’s Papers has the Supreme Court upholding all of the major parts of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, a call to not treat depressed kids with new antidepressants, 40-year-old Basque rebellion in Spain ending and more.

feral children: amazing. Who knew there were so many? tuna: wonder if that will change the fact that WIC programs give tuna to breastfeeding women??

I got an alert today from NRDC: “Unless we intervene and block those plans now, the administration will proceed with open-pit mining in the historic Everglades, clearcutting in the pristine Alaskan rainforest, and drilling in Utah’s world-renowned Redrock Wilderness. They are also finalizing a plan for commercial logging in the awe-inspiring Giant Sequoia National Monument, which is not a B
