News – The Forgotten One

Hypocrisy is everywhere today. Even as Jessica Lynch is thrown laurels for her rescue, the world largely forgets another casualty of the strife that continues to infest the globe. Americans forget one of there own. How many remember the name Rachel Corrie? How many remember that, in her efforts to help innocent Palestinian civilians, she was run down by a bulldozer? An American made bulldozer, one of the many pieces of hardware that we give to them. How much time has Bush devoted to this American girl who, witnesses say, was intentionally, not accidentally run down? How many know that, after her death, Israeli forces used a pitiful excuse to assail the organization she was a part of? Apparently two terrorists attended her funeral, which was open to the public. That’s enough to be harassed these days. Just be near a terrorist and you’re one of them. Especially if you’re someone who annoys the government. Few remember. No news stations tell her tale? No world leaders spare her a thought, while they continue to spout on about Jessica’s valiant rescue. Even as the story given by the military is questioned for validity. Believe me, I’m glad she is safe. That much I can assure you, but the sheer negligence of forgetting another amid this strife is angering.

It seems the opponents of the US/UK resolution to both drop sanctions and give the US and UK wide powers over Iraq will be passed. The opponents of the resolution have decided to back it. Personally, I question this move. The UN has lost its only bargaining chip and now largely relies of US whim to allow them any part in Iraq. I don’t see Bush allowing the UN to do much besides menial tasks, which is sad.

Of course, perhaps the UN wishes to let the US screw up Iraq. Seeing that there is another incident of violence with more civilians dead, how long will the US be able to keep this up before they are forced out of Iraq by an angry populace or are forced to admit defeat and look to the UN for assistance? I worry most about how many will suffer and die before the US manages to fix what they’ve broken.

Afghanistan remains a battlefield as well, with a new skirmish as of late. Five more enemies dead.

The US has halted talks with Iran over further allegations of supporting terrorism. We’re still waiting for actual evidence, save for officials stating that ‘we have it’.

International Papers goes to town on Sharon and his apparent lack of care for peace, save through his own domination of Palestine. Today’s Papers leads with the stories of the day for the US. The UN backing of the US/UK resolution and the passing of the 318 billion tax cut with some additional compromises. Slate advises you check the editorials for the best, if partisan, insight.

Despite that the Pentagon can’t account for a trillion dollars in inefficiency, the Republican dominated congress is pushing through the largest military budget since the cold war. What’s really sad is I had to find this on a UK news site. The row continues over Rummy’s dearest wish to study, but not develop low yield nukes.

In it all, truth is here:Hollow Men and False Victories. That is what this all amounts to. And it is a sad sight to see. I pity the leaders of this world and their ways.

Why hold any pretense? As much as the EPA stands for, I agree they might as well just name Cheney as director and get it over with. Were I Christine Todd Whitman, I might have quit in sheer frustration myself. For example, how does the Bush Administration fight forest fires? They let the loggers cut down all the trees. I’m reminded of the term, ‘cure the disease by killing the patient’ all of a sudden.

The continued cover up by the Bush Administration toward 9/11 doesn’t increase confidence in them. What are they trying to hide? Why can’t we see what the truth is?

Howard Dean is doing better in his spiel as to why he’d make a better president than Bush. It’s worth a gander. Of course, not all of what he says is ‘golden’.

An interesting device. A jacket for women that can be armed to emit an electric shock when someone accosts her. Like a stun gun, it won’t kill, just stun and hurt. The cost is estimated at about $1,000, and could be in limited production by the end of the year.

For reassurance that Bush is the insane one, we have another Bushism for you. “First, let me make it very clear, poor people aren’t necessarily killers. Just because you happen to be not rich doesn’t mean you’re willing to kill.”—Washington, D.C., May 19, 2003
