Movies – Stargate
I bought that this Friday. I found a nice ‘Ultimate Edition’ with two DVDs. One has the Theatrical version, one the Directors cut. Last night I watched the Directors cut, then watched it again with commentary this morning.
I last watched Stargate a loooong time ago and have been a transient watcher of the television series. It was nice to get back with Kurt Russell’s wonderful performance of Colonel Jack O’Neil. He’s one of my general favorites in the acting world and his performance is a delight. Though James Spader can’t be left out of the kudos.
One interesting factoid that popped up as I was watching the commentary version is the name of one of the soldiers. It wasn’t something I picked up on the first watch. Just a strange feeling that one of the actors was familiar(beyond Russell and Spader). Turns out one of them went on to play Harry on Third Rock from the Sun.
How many of you remember him in Stargate? 😉
On to the movie’s story itself, it’s a nice one. Not too complex, but holding a few nice twists and turns with a secret agenda and the task of surmounting a language barrier. The latter provides quite a few chuckles through much of the movie. The majority of the movie focuses around the age old struggle for freedom of an oppressed people, dominated by a cruel, if stylish god figure played convincingly by Jaye Davidson.
The introduction of Russell, Spader and company prove to be just the right catalyst for revolution, started off by the amusing and often cute troupe of young boys that emulate the strange visitors.
Overall, it’s an enjoyable movie, the effects simple and effective enough that their dated stature matters not at all, allowing one to view the movie without distraction by such things.
Now, tomorrow is Matrix day for me. Yes, long after the release, but I don’t fancy being caught up in masses. I’m hoping that catching an early(before noon) showing three days after the premier should provide me an environment that’s not too crowded. 😉
We shall see. Have a good weekend folks. 🙂
Best of luck. I have been to a couple of movies recently that were sold out. I much prefer going to see something when there are about five people in the theatre. 🙂

i have seen both the matrix and stargate. the matrix i really liked, and when the dvd comes down in price i’ll buy it. ryn~ obviously, i can’t explain in about 7500 characters the contents of my entire library, with lots more books out there i haven’t had the chance to read. i love challenges, and this is the most challenging of tarot interpretations. i’m sure you’d enjoy it.

Stargate is a very cool movie, but the television series is quite good too!
