Movie – Bulletproof Monk and The Crow x3
It was a good movie day. It was a little too warm for my jacket, but I brought the small one, so I could carry it comfortably after I got too hot wearing it on the way back home.
As to the movie, it was an interesting flick. With Chow Yu Fat in it and the sort of special effects I’ve seen in the trailers, I knew I’d enjoy it simply for the action value. But there’s more to it than that, as there is a good smattering of humor throughout that keeps things light even when the story gets more serious.
The premise is simple, s is often the case for comedic action movies(note, this is not stupid/silly like Kung Pow was). All powerful scroll that can make the world paradise or hell, nazis want it and Chow’s character is its protector, eventually coming to seek the next protector who will take his burden.
Nothing too deeply intellectual, but enjoyable if one isn’t looking for a literary masterpiece. I recommend it for those who think the description I gave is vaguely interesting. 😉
as a side note, it has been a nice weekend. I picked up The Crow collectors edition. A three pack with The Crow, The Crow: city of angels and The Crow: Salvation. I’d never seen the last two before and loved the first, so it was an easy choice to plunk down green for them, the movies accompanied by a good flood of commentary and special features.
I love DVDs. 😉
I’ve watched all three, as well as the commentary for the first and third this weekend.
I still think #1 is the absolute best. It was Brandon Lee’s legacy and quite a nice one for him to be remembered for. The darkly gothic tale was unique(to me). A good story, fun effects and well choreographed fight sequences mixed with memorable situations, such as the pawnshop and meeting crashing, two of my favorite scenes.
The second and third are with different ‘Crows’, each having a different motivation, in so much as why they seek to right wrongs by putting the bad guys six feet under. The second has a certain similar gothic feel. The big city, the bad guys criminal dregs. Vincent Perez is no Brandon Lee, but he does well in his role. The main baddy in this one, Judah, has the cool, deadly type of manner that the crime lord in the first had. Yet he was different enough to not make it seem the same old story. One strange aspect of the story is that there is quite a bit of BDSM in the background, it being a fetish of the main baddy.
The third was different in a few ways. They took some more liberties with the powers of The Crow, which I found interesting. The protagonist dies my electrocution as he’s falsely charged for the murder of his girlfriend, the metallic mask he wears marking the ‘mime’ look into his face when he revives from the dead. The third has a deeper story behind it. Rather than a straight tale of vengeance, its mixed with a bit of a murder mystery, where The Crow is seeking the one person who set him up(who has a strange scar on his arm). Along the way, corruption is uncovered.
All in all, a good series. I liked them all.. sort of three ways to look at one subject. Which one you might enjoy best is a matter of personal opinion. But in this case, neither sequel eclipses the perfect feel of the first.
I look forward to seeing the sequel to The Crow.. though I doubt I’d like the other two better than the first, either.
Warning Comment
I haven’t seen the sequels, but ‘The Crow’ is an amazing movie. It’s a shame it was Brandon Lee’s last. I can only imagine the kind of work he would be doing today if that unfortunate accident never happened… Later,
