DT – Vampire Fiction

I’ve been musing a few more general topics for my occasional writing bouts. I’ve written a lot of things on a lot of topics.. mostly fantasy and science fiction on the overall. One thing I haven’t written of yet are vampires and other monsters of that variety(werewolves, ghosts, etc..).

But one thing I’ve noticed is that vampire fiction is a thickly explored subject. Everyone writes about vampires and that creates a problem for me. I tend to like to find new things to write about, that don’t seem to be ripped from the work of others. I think my most original idea to date has been my Dark Holiday’s series(next chapter in July).

But when it comes to a subject matter that has been explored to undeath(hah!), how is one to take it and give it a new spin? That’s been my quandary as of late.

I know the type of things I want in general with a story like this. I’ll want to focus on a single anti-hero type character in a general modern setting. He’ll be the undead in question. But beyond that, I want there to be a larger issue or problem.. I like to have some plot in stories, yet I’m not sure just what sort of overriding plot there might be.

I’ve thought about White Wolf’s World of Darkness(RPG with vampires, Werewolves, Mages, Changelings and Wraiths), but Vampire: The Masquerade is a world packed with vampire intrigue. I wanted this setting to have fewer supernatural creatures and no great organization between them.

That leaves, most likely, mortals as the antagonists. Which allows for a wider range of possibilities. I’ve considered some manner of dark corporate entity, which hearkens to Pentex in WoD, though this would be a ‘normal’ corp, most likely. Not one infected by evil’s taint as Pentex is. No, perhaps a more ‘normal’ threat? Something mundane, yet fantastic?

I’m not sure yet. I don’t want to plagiarize ideas from WoD or other forms of vampire fiction in general. But I’ll continue to think about it. I have some ideas for a possible standalone ‘intro’ to this character and his world, such as it is. If I can get the vague ideas into text I’ll post it up. In the meantime, ideas are welcome. All are carefully considered. 🙂

ryn~ i have been writing fiction for years. the problem is that i rarely have the emotional energy to actually write down the long and complicated stories i have going on in my head. most of what i write is fantasy, complex, involving the development of languages and religion. interesting, but intensive.

i’ve been going through getting out some of my artwork although i can’t find the working scanner yet! i am very very nervous of putting the artwork on general display, but since you have asked i’d be prepared to email it to you once i have it on the mac. i don’t generally show my work unless it’s asked for specifically. would this be ok?

thought i would come back and comment upon your words, but i still can’t think of any good ideas. i am tempted to write an entry about my own writing, but it’s probably too boring or weird. i will look forward to reading anything you do produce.

*wouldn’t mind talking to you about this to drum up ideas* 🙂
