Redemption (Chapter 6)
Dimitri walked through the underground parking lot. He was one of the last ones out of the performance. There were still a few cars around, but not many. Dimitri felt a shift in the air, something different, something wrong. But no sign he had noticed showed in his face or his manner. He almost reached his truck when he moved. He grabbed the gun and wrist that was thrust in his direction from the side of the truck. A quick twist and the man’s wrist snapped like celery. Dimitri’s foot connected with the attacker’s stomach and he went flying against the far wall unconcious. As Dimitri span around he checked the loads in the gun and found a full clip. He shot twice near pillars and two more attackers went down. He flipped to the side as a shotgun blast tore through the wall where he had been. Dimitri moved like lightning. He grabbed the shotgun, twisting it out of the man’s grip in a quick move and brought the butt of the gun around. It connected with the man’s head in a thick crack and he went down. He flipped the shotgun around and shot from the hip three times, pumping the gun like a machine. He heard silence, but stayed on guard. Out of the silence came applause. He moved his shotgun over a bit toward the sound. Out of the shadows came a tall man with blonde hair and a smaller man with a rat face carrying a briefcase. Dimitri picked up another gun from one of the bodies and straightened up to face them.
“Bravo. Simply stunning performance.”
Dimitri simply raised the gun and shot once. The man’s head jerked and he looked behind him. He touched the side of his head where hair was missing from the bullet.
“In that case, I’ll skip the small talk. We’re here to hire you for a job.”
“In that case, you came all this way for nothing. I don’t do that sort of work anymore.”
“At least listen to our offer. I think it would toward your benefit.”
Two men came out of the shadows on either side of Dimitri and pointed their guns at his head. Dimitri’s lip curled. He bent back and shoved the arms of the men down at the same time. They fired in reflex and screamed as the bullets tore through each other’s legs. They fell writhing on the ground. Dimitri pointed the gun at the man again.
“You came to the wrong man.”
Just as Dimitri was about to pull the trigger he felt a shift in the air behind him and juked to the side. An automatic opened up in the space where he had been. The tall blonde man and his henchman ran off. Dimitri flipped up the shotgun and fired off one round. There was a groan and silence. Dimitri swore, finding he was alone again. He took out his cell and called the police, sat in his truck and waited.
“This is not the way I wanted to finish my evening…”
