Knightfall (Chapter 5)
It was raining. A slow drizzle that seemed to soak you no matter what coat you were wearing. Jubilee walked down the outskirts of the city. She had never been anywhere near the outskirts. She clutched the box Cid had given her tigher. She didn’t like it here, just a few moments earlier a druken older woman had made a pass at her on the street. She looked up and noticed that as she got closer to the edge of the city the streets got cleaner, the houses and people in that area looking less seedy. She was so busy looking around that she walked right into a large, tall man.
“Going somewhere lass?” the man boomed. Jubilee looked up and gasped. The man standing in front of her was the tallest, biggest man she’d ever seen, wearing some uniform she’d never seen before. She looked behind him (which wasn’t easy) and gasped again. There stood a huge compound, almost like a palace.
“Is there something you want lass?” the man said, this time with an edge in his voice. Jubilee shook herself out of her reviere. She cleared her throat and spoke more calmly than she felt.
“Good eve sir. A tinker sends his greeting and asks the Lady’s audience with his messenger if it pleases her.”
She held up the box as she finished the speech Cid had taught her. The man looked at her for a few moments before he took the box and opened it. He looked inside and then closed the box with a snap.
“Come.” he spoke walking toward the compound. A squad of guards made way before him and huge double doors opened in front of him. He led her down a long hallway and into a smaller room.
“Wait here.”
So Jubilee, not knowing what else to do, stood dripping and shivering with her teeth chattering, a small puddle of water around her. She had been standing there so long with her head down that she didn’t even notice someone had come in before she heard a voice.
“Orion, I’m suprised at you. We have better manners than this.”
Jubilee looked up, trying to stop her teeth from chattering. Her eyes opened wide as she looked upon one of the most beautiful women she had ever seen. It was almost if she had a glow around her.
“You look so cold. Come, we’ll get you in something warm and something warm to drink, Ms. Jubilee.”
“How do you know my name? Who are you?”
“Why child, you called on me. I am Lady Katherine.”
Jubilee smiled and then fainted…
