Quack Quack Quack Quack Quack
Some of you may remember back in June when I wrote the entry about a wild duck that came into our yard and decided to adopt us; but if you don’t, here is a link to that entry.
Anyhoo – This duck, whom I have named AFLAC Ducky Duck because our guild in SWG is named AFLAC (A Few Law Abiding Citizens), has stuck around – for the most part. She has made a disappearing act on us a couple of times.
She loves me. Yes, I can pick her up, turn her upside down and snuggle my face on her face. She is a sweetheart.
Now she had done another disappearing act on me over this last week. I made sure I put food out for her (I have been giving her cracked corn along with all the bugs and worms she can gather from my yard) but it was hard to tell if she was eating the corn or if the squirrels were.
Today I was busy eating my lunch and Kal had taken Autumn outside (they had finished before I did) and I was in the process of heating up left over mashed potatoes and gravy when I hear Kal calling me through the kitchen window. He wanted to show me something.
At first I thought he wanted me to see something Autumn was doing, like playing in the sandbox or laying in the hammock… but after I entered the back yard he went to the side of the yard where the water garden is and I thought maybe a unique plant had shown up as often does because of the birds and squirrels dropping seeds. But when I rounded the edge of the Florida room he pointed towards the window a/c unit – I have crotons planted there and I thought maybe they did something weird that I didn’t think crotons could do – like flower.
Nope – that was not it.
I looked UNDER the window unit and I saw AFLAC…
…sitting on a nest!
That is 9 eggs in that nest!
I did a Google search and found that Moscovy ducks lay one egg a day and do not sit on the eggs until they are ready to incubate them. Well she is definitely sitting on the eggs.
The incubation time for Moscovy ducks is 35 days. So I guess we will have a bunch of ducklings wandering around sometime in December.
Our house has been a pretty fertile one! So far I have had baby kittens (the baby kitty terrors) that I had to hand raise, our fish had babies, we had finches that laid eggs and had babies, I had a baby and now the duck! Good thing our rabbit is a male…. LOL
One last Moscovy duck factoid: Masocvy ducks do not quack. The males hiss and females squeak.

What a great learning lesson for your daughter. I think that is so neat. My children remember when a robin built a nest under our deck and they would peak thru and see if the eggs where there every day. They were only 1 & 3 and still remember it well. They thought it was so cute. You must have a knack for animals. Maybe they are trying to tell you something. Good luck momma.

I’m so excited for you! I love it when my animals have babies LOL. Baby ducks are adorable. Isn’t it odd that she laid eggs in November? Well I guess in Florida it doesn’t matter that much, does it. Never mind 🙂

Oh that’s so cool! I’d be careful with ducks though. I heard of this one family in Florida fed a bunch of migrating ducks and the next year there were hundreds of ducks that filled up their swimming pool. They couldn’t get rid of them.

OMG that is SOOOOOOOO Kool! But you gotta watch now because when birds find a good place to nest they will always come back! And so will their ducklings and their ducklings ducklings and so on! In a couple years you could have a VERY crowded back yard!

Hi there, I found you through Memelou and so glad I did as this entry was just beautiful! I had to laugh when you mention you have fish and cats and baby..so do I. Actually I have 3 fishtanks, 2 spoiled burmese cats and a 9mth old wee girl. You are obviously a very caring person and the duck realises this as wild animals aren’t always that friendly. Kiri.
