Healthier Cookie Monster Eating Fewer Cookies

POSTED: 7:50 am EDT April 8, 2005

NEW YORK — The Cookie Monster is straightening up his act and taking control over his cookie obsession. “Sesame Street’s” beloved blue, furry monster is going to learn some lessons about moderation as the children’s show kicks off its 36th season on PBS.

Cookie Monster will now advocate eating healthy. His “C is for cookie” song has been replaced with a new song — “A Cookie Is a Sometimes Food.”

It’s part of the show’s Healthy Habits For Life initiative, and other characters are taking part, too. “Elmo loves exercise,” says Elmo. “Count your fruits and vegetables,” says the Count. And “Hand-washing is fun!” says Big Bird.

awww…that’s kinda’ sad!

Is this a joke? Seriously? Actually, it sounds like an invitation for adults who grew up watching Sesame Street to sue because they now have an unhealthy obsession with cookies. Weiiiiird.

I think it’s a fabulous idea…. If we can get the kids while their young, they won’t have to deal with the crap we’re dealing with trying to get and STAY healthy. I mean, who wants to hear a song about eating healthy but it still a good idea.

Cool! You know I spent a lot of time looking for exercise videos for my girls, I had the hardest time finding them. I ended up ordering some online. They have lots of sedintary stuff for kids to watch but nothing that gets them up and moving.

that’s like brainwashing….i mean SesameStreet has always been about brainwashing (raise your hand if you can remember at least 1 Sesame Street song) but this is crazy.

That’s just wrong. It’s not up to Cookie Monster if my kids eat cookies on the regular. IT’S UP TO ME. ryn: When are you going back to Cali?????? BRING IT EAZY!

I wish we could go back to the “old days” when kids were allowed to be kids and enjoy life!!!!

quote from looming claim: *sniff* “i had no idea that cookies were bad for me. Cookie monster always seemed so healthy and thin. He made me belive that cookies were a food group. Now i don’t know what to believe.” LOL

RYN: We have a countdown in our store. If I remember correctly, today would be…98 days to go.

sacrelige, I tell ya

It’s a good idea, but it’s sad too. I love Cookie just as he is. I’m a child of the 70’s and grew up with Sesame Street. I’m such a purest that I don’t really like Elmo. Hee hee. Cookie and Grover are my favs and to me he will always sing “C is for Cookie” besides he ate other stuff too and sung a song about trying new foods.

WHAT YOU TALKIN’ ABOUT! I’m so mad. Heck just thinking of COOKIE MONSTER, makes me want a tall glass of whole milk and a big chocolate chip cookie. LOL I’m sorry folks have lost their mind. I say let the kids and cookie monster eat cake! OOPS COOKIES!

I grew up watching that show and never had a weight problem until adulthood. Why don’t we blame too much tv time, too much fast food, and not enough trips to the park for childhood obesity. No, we have to change the show. THere is a difference between allowing your kids an hour of tv and 3 hours of playtime vs. 5 hours of tv. Which one do you think causes childhood obesity?

Holy crap! That is the biggest piece of crap I’ve ever heard of. That is seriously the most ridiculous thing! They’re taking away characters that a child loves and replacing them with the same disgusting weight and diet-obsessed robots that Americans have become. CHILDREN do NOT need to be worried about their fruit/vegetable/cookie consumption. They are children, this is why they have PARENTS.

Man–sorry for the rant, and that was sort of hypocritcal of me, but that just makes me so mad! Soon children will be just as obsessed with their weight and eating as their parents are, and WHAM, here comes an increase in the number of ED’s.

HEY I GREW UP WITH “COOKIE MONSTER” AND MY WEIGHT AINT GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM. I’M A PARENT AND ITS MY JOB TO ENSURE THAT MY GIRLS KNOW ABOUT THE FOOD GROUPS AND WHAT YOU CAN HAVE PLENTY OF AND WHAT YOU NEED TO GO EASY ON. WHY ARE THEY SPOILING ALL THE FUN. YES THEY NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE PROGRAMMERS BUT REALLY THIS IS TOO MUCH. CAROL(BIRMINGHAM, UK)

RYN: Thanks for believing in me C! Yes Sister it is summer and I’m hating on all of you skinny minis! But my time will come, soon and very soon! Smooches…

WHAT!!! No…why can’t they just leave Cookie Monster alone. Ay I miss the good old days.

The loss of the Cookie Monster is a tragedy for us all. How wrong is it? A Sesame street icon.
