Realised I haven’t updated in like…3 months?
We went for our Bintan Club Med 5 day trip in end Nov and it was really fun. Caleb enjoyed running around, playing with the guest officers, and swimming. He seemed to know that we’re on holidays and slept very well on the big bed with us. He would say "nite nite" when he wants to sleep, n once he wakes up he’ll say "gai gai (which means go walk walk)". Bb was still too young to go to the Kids Club so basically we spent a lot of time together, the 3 of us.
The funny thing is he was actually freaked out by the sea n sand on the beach. He seems to feel the waves r dangerous n kept pointing to us to away from the beach. He didn’t dare to walk on sand too, even though we took off our shoes n “demo” to him that it is ok. He is such a cautious bb. Haha.
I like the free flow food n drinks concept, and we also had fun with the archery. The beach side spa was wonderful (non-inclusive in the package though). We had to take turn to go to spa when bb was having his nap…hehe.
Bad thing was bb caught streptococcus there. He started having rashes n fever on our last day there, n we took the earliest boat home the next day. The pd gave antibiotics but the fever was still running high despite medication. Think it went up to 39 even. The next day we went to the pd for review, she asked whether we wanted to admit him to hospital. She did say that her only concern was he may get dehydrated cos some kids refuse to drink water cos of the sore throat (though Caleb was still drinking his milk n looks fine). In the end she gave me the admission letter n said to send him in if he starts refusing water n looks dehydrated. Amazingly though, the fever dropped soon after and there was no need to go to hospital. Thank God that baby fought the bacteria well n recovered.
During that period of time, my maid was back at Indonesia and my Mum was away in Taiwan for hols, so there was only both of us and bb. Even though it was tough physically, I think we had fun with baby (who was cheery despite being sick) and gd bonding time together. It’s hardly the three of us onli at home.
2011 is a year filled with blessings. I want to walk closer to God in 2012, and be a better wife.
Happy 2012 everyone!

Morning! Although I am doing a Montessori diploma myself, I think it’s not complete program for a young child. Montessori is very western and the key part of its philosophy is that a child has his sensitive periods of which he is particularly tuned to learning a certain task or activity, saying an infant learning to feed himself. They believe during a sensitive period, the child should be given all the attention to master learning the task and not be distracted. Not all children go through the same sensitive periods. Hence a true Montessori environment typically has few structured class approach. It’s more of an individualist approach. A criticism of Montessori kids are that they grow up very self-centered and hard to conform to a team and rule-based environment, which is the case in most of our Asian primary schools. There are several good points such as recognising the style of communication (talking to a child with respect, not talk down), directress ‘modeling’ behavior for kids to mirror etc. But syllabus wise, as in the type of things a child learn is lacking to me.

To me a good early childhood program should incorporate at least two school of thoughts: ideally whole brain learning and montessori. And a complete program should have a good content (prev point), a good diet (many good feed junk at school) and sufficient exercise (the right kind of exercise stimulates the brain, Montessori lacks this). Make sure you ask about their diet, house rules (sick child, sick teacher). Having said this, it is hard to come by a near perfect program (which is why I am starting my own ;)), so some stimulation is better than none at home with your maid. And Caleb gets to socialise with other kids, which has intangible benefits. $900 is a lot to pay for a half day program, so perhaps you would like to shop around first. Be wary of commercialised chain like Cherie Hart which doesn’t have a good reputation. Oh you should be able to drop in unannounced. If they are not hiding anything, any preschool should be able to let you in to observe with supervision. Best of luck! Boon and I went through over tens of schools before we settled on one for N. Message me again if you wanna discuss further. We could chat via gmail or facebook.

ryn: yes, i think pride plays an important role. i need to find some pride in myself. 🙂

ryn: you are right. guess it is more for girls who still have certain needs that they are not self-sufficient or those who want extra pamperings. eg. someone who wants a husband that does housework rather than hire a maid.
