Nursing – Validations / Test

Dear Diary:
This past week we had a patient assessment written test that I scored an 86 on. We also started to do some real pharmacology in pharm class since our drug calculations portion is done.

Last night we did our vital signs validation. I was paired up with another EMT and she got to go first. The instructor was a bit of a bitch in that I got a pulse of 80 and she said it was wrong. I did it again and got an 82. Wrong. I did it a third time and got 78 and she said that was right. When you count for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 and I could for 30 seconds and multiply by 2, the 2 points difference comes down to 1 heart beat. So then she gets up and walks away and comes back to say "why are you still here?" Um… I didn’t validate on blood pressure yet. "Oh! I was wondering why you didn’t leave." So I took the blood pressure and was spot on.  Frustrating but we both passed.

I have a ton of reading to do this weekend. About 10 chapters or more.

I also got my clinical assignment. I start on 3/8 and will be on the urology/kidney transplant floor. Considering all my urological problems (bladder cancer / removal of bladder) it kind of seems like a fitting floor for me. I can’t wait to get started.

My friend moved in on Monday. She has settled in to the basement and has basically stayed out of Lisa’s way. She leaves around 7 am and doesn’t come home until 6 pm. She is looking for apartments this weekend so the hope is that she won’t be with us for very long. I haven’t noticed it to be a problem with her in the house. G was bothering our guest on Tuesday, going down to "visit" her a ton of times but the newness has worn off and he has stopped doing that.

There is more drama at work. My boss is protecting a seasonal employee, who happens to be dating my boss’ niece, and got in trouble with fencing stolen jewelry to support a drug habit. I documented the whole conversation with my boss in a memo to file in case something happens. I’m just dumbfounded that my boss continues to manage under the "friends & family" plan. You would think he would learn after all the other problems he has brought upon the department by doing this.

Thankfully in our region it’s pretty easy to pass practicals, but I earned my stripes during my CC practical when the man who was my assessment patient had an irregular heart rate. I told the instructor I needed to stop/break from the assessment and asked the guy if he had hx of an irregular heart beat. He said that yes, he did have a cardiac arrhythmia and I was only the 2nd EMT in 25 yrs to catch it while doing assement. 😉 Bitches for practical testing are the worst!

Your boss is such an ass. I thought L wasn’t on board with the temporary stay? What happened?
