Open Your Mind
Almost 3 years ago now, after crying for 2 solid hours over nothing & everything, I had an epiphany & I began writing this poem out so fast that I thought my hand would break off. It’s kinda long so congrats if you make it to the end.
This sadness has me stuck in a whirlwind
pattern of negative thinking on
what ifs?, should haves & regrets
and everyone knows those are the killers
to any ones short-lived life but if the palm
of my hand speaks the truth
then I’ve got less time than most
to do more than anyone could
whose given old age, a family, and
countless ways to count their blessings
but even in their time of death
time itself was not enough.
And all they did was not enough
or not good enough just because their
time in life was not paved in gold
but the way to God is:
if you accept Him & love Him & ask forgiveness.
And well, I don’t know about all that
but I do know that I wouldn’t complain
if I had a mind filled with a knowledge
and a wisdom I could share with the world
between the faces of a literary masterpiece.
But that masterpiece was already written
but no one is reading it & they’re losing sight
and they’re going down without a fight.
And now that you took the chance
you believe it’s all a lie!!
But the words are falling all around
and you can’t escape what you can’t deny
so open your eyes & see His masterpiece
alive in your heart, alive in your mind.
You can run from Him but you’re only
running in a dense atmosphere of an honesty you can’t deny
as the Bible sings:
"Open your mind & know me for what I am:
A literary masterpiece in the palm of your hand.
But you’re scared & you’re running
from something you can’t understand
just because it’s outside the mind & now you realize
that there’s more to the bottom line
and it’s something you just can’t define." And you know what else?
Inside I laugh because I know that
old age can’t defeat me because you see,
I wouldn’t complain if I had wrinkly hands
littered with calluses because they show
the world I did my part & left my mark
and now I’m walking a road paved in gold.
At the end is my destiny & it’s Love
and it’s the most Beautiful thing
one can ever see or hope to feel
because beauty & love were lost the day
infidelity took place & rape & murder
and now all that’s left of this world
is filled with murderous rage,
passion crimes twisting the act to make it right.
Yes, these are the times people.
Always looking out over your shoulder
to watch out for your lives, praying to make it home alive.
Do you know who’s got your back?
Mother earth is cleaning out, or is it God, or is it both?
Do you know where your faith is? And your hope?
And your trust? And your love?
But where is our America?
All I see when I look around is honestly, Nothing.
Nothing to see: just trains of people
stuffing their faces at fast-food places
just because it’s fast.
No one has time to sit, to relax,
to eat a healthy meal with family.
Everything’s always on the go, our lives were made on the go!
Your life is so fast-paced that in the end,
things you did are just a blur & things you said
are just run-on sentences repeating with no meaning.
Is there no substance left in our souls?
No, I don’t believe so.
And in the end you’re faced with the movie of your life.
Every word, every action recorded for your eyes
to see at the end of time & you blubber & you bargain for your life
to go back & make it right, to do everything you wanted before your time.
But it’s too late & you’re standing at the gate on a road paved in gold
in the presence of the most profound Love in the universe
to be accepted where you can never die or know pain ever again.
And all you care about is going back for just a little more time,
just to make it right, giving up something so Divine for more time, more time.
