Movie Reflections: The Wedding Date
I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen this movie so many times, and yet, I never get tired of it. Every rewatch feels like a cozy, familiar hug.
That scene where Nick Mercer (Dermot Mulroney) shows Kat Ellis (Debra Messing) how it’s done? Ooohhh, it gets me every time. The way he calmly reassures her:
“Close your eyes, close your eyes, close. your. eyes. You’re safe. You can relax. I’m not gonna kiss you. He’s gonna be so sorry he lost you, so stop worrying. Forget the past, forget the pain, and remember what an incredible woman you are. If you do that, he’ll realize what he lost.”
I swear, every time I hear those lines, my knees buckle. Can someone please say this to me in real life?
And then—boom! The plot twist at the rehearsal dinner. What. A. Hot. Mess. Express. The drama was chaotic perfection, and honestly, I was living for it. As someone who has half-siblings, I low-key related to the complicated dynamic between Kat and Amy (Amy Adams). There was something so real about their relationship—the mix of resentment, love, and that underlying tension that sometimes just exists in blended families.
I also really resonated with Kat in a personal way. She spends so much time worrying about what other people think, and I feel that deeply. It’s something I’ve worked on over the years, but sometimes it’s like a reflex—one I can’t always control. Is it just me, or does anyone else struggle with this too?
Oh, and poor Jeffrey. But hey, that’s what he gets for being such a naughty ex. Karma, baby!
