A is lying moping on the bed saying “it’s a shitty feeling not being able to run to your baby’s side and put a cool washcloth on her head.”

The latest news is that she has some kind of viral meningitis but they don’t know what kind it is. She was starting to feel better, but they took her IV out too soon and she had a relapse today. Her mother in law was visiting and saw JA getting feverish and nauseous and went out to get a nurse, but the nurse blew her off. JA’s mother in law is no slouch, and her husband is a highly regarded and well known pediatrician in the area, so she called him and then announced loudly that Dr. K is on his way. Two doctors nearby jumped, gave the nurse the business, and everyone scurried.

This was all very distressing to A. I remembered meeting Mrs. K when JA was married. Mrs. K. is the sort to bring over things for you to decorate your house with. She was up on the counters rearranging JA’s things. JA seemed a little irritated, but when I commented on it she said she could deal. And now she’s getting the positive benefits of Mrs. K’s take charge personality. But, says A., it’s really sad when even in a so called good hospital the staff won’t pay any attention to what a non professional (who has been sitting in the room with the patient all morning) reports, and it takes someone with influence to get help.

When you go to the hospital, make sure at least one person with you isn’t shy.
