Summary of the Year, 2010
And on New Year’s Eve, too! How lucky.
1.What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?
Lesse. I had a threesome! (What a way to start an entry!) I started paying my own rent, got a (real) job, graduated from college… Had sex with someone from the Internet (see beginning of paragraph). I finished raising a Guide Dog puppy and cried for about two months straight when he didn’t make it through Guide Dog school. I learned a piece of music with no one’s help but my own!
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
If I made a resolution, I sure as hell can’t remember it. 2009 was the year of HELL, so if I made any resolution, it was to have a better year than the year before. I think I’ve done that well. I’ve had some rough spots, but mostly ups, and definitely nothing as depressed and suicidal as winter a year ago.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Anope.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Anope.
5. What countries did you visit?
Anone. (Sad face)
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
A Logan living with me and Bryan. It might be far-fetched and entirely impossible, but it’s what I want more than anything else right now.
7. What date(s) from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Oh God, I’m so bad at dates. I will always remember the weekend when Logan flew in and we spent the entire time really getting to know one another and connecting. Thanksgiving weekend when he came in again and the three of us became very close (hint hint nudge nudge). There was also the day that I graduated! And the day that Porter was diagnosed with cataracts, so that he could never become a Guide Dog. The day I moved into my new apartment with Bryan, forever ridding ourselves of the horrid green house and all of the baggage that came with it.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Graduating college!! Wheee! I’m a real grown up, now.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Nothing stands out significantly. I’ve done a pretty ace job of keeping myself sane and with health choice-making skills. The first time Logan came to visit, I almost became too lustful and almost cheated on Bryan. I am so incredibly glad that I did not. So much good came out of my self-control, that it makes me burst at the seams. So much love and caring from all three of us.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Thankfully, no.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I. Bought. A. New. Piano. With my graduation money! I am so happy with it. It’s an electric upright, with real hammer key action and the voicing sampled from a Steinway. Yeah, I know it’s not a ‘real’ piano, but it’s the most awesome piano someone can find for a couple thousand bucks. I also don’t need to tune it, and it’s… Just, having a piano again is so amazing. I love it.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Bryan, as always. A well-centered, grounded, level-headed individual who is willing to try new things and always makes the best of any situation. Someone who trusts me completely, and is willing to stop at nothing to gaurantee my happiness.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Ah, well. My dad, as per usual. Nothing so bad this year as when I lived with my parents. I can never seem to get my footing with him. I argued with my mom quite a lot over money and other irrelevant things. It bothers me how much money and material goods matter to those people. When I took over my own finances, things settled down quite a lot, though I can’t help but feel that my parents still resent all of the money they spent putting me through school.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Oh, God. Rent, especially when I ‘cut myself off’ for several months. I was paying out of my savings for quite a while, which were somewhat meager to start. I finally secured a job, and I cannot tell you how relieved I was to get my first paycheck.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
LoganLoganLoganLoganLoganLoganLogan is coming back into town!
16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
Um. ‘Everybody’ by Ingrid Michaelson. Or maybe ‘Orange Sky’ by Alexi Murdoch. Songs about love. 🙂
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
Much healthier. I gained back the 15 pounds I lost due to depression, work out regularly, haven’t tried towrap my car around a tree… I actually have motivation and drive, I’m in love with my life! (And two beautiful men.)
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
If I said ‘seen Logan’ would you whack me? I hope I’m not boring anyone to death by being too repetitive. (I am also exciting, because he is flying in again tomorrow! Guess what’s on my mind?) I’m pretty happy with the choices that I’ve made this year, though I think the one thing I should have done more was hunt for jobs. I got one just in time, and probably should have been looking much harder, rather than hoping something would fall into my lap.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Being an ass to my parents. I don’t necessarily want to be on the best terms with them, but that doesn’t justify my poor behaviour in their presence.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
Right before Christmas Bryan, Logan, and I spent a few days together, while he got ready to go back to Colorado to visit his parents. I spent Christmas proper with my family in Torrey, where there were no arguments, my mother didn’t slap me, and my brother and I got on wonderfully. (Much better than last year, if you catch my meaning.)
21. Who deleted question 21?
The bogey man. (WhoooOooOoooo)
22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Yes. For the first time since falling in love with Bryan three years ago. I could never have imagined that the two most important people in my life could love one another the same way I love each of them, but somehow fortune smiled on me, and I cannot describe the amount of love that fills my life.
23. How many one-night stands?
None. Again as a usual, I’m fully committed.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
I don’t watch TV! At least not at any scheduled time or with commercials. Bryan and I did manage to wade our way through all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager, and I have to say that’s always a hit. I’ve finally made a Trekkie of the man! (Another tally in the ‘Addie’ column.)
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Nopers. It is quite difficult to cause me to hate.
26. What was the best book you read?
Hm. Probably ‘Stranger in a Strange Land,’ by Heinlen. Or maybe ‘The Left Hand of Darkness,’ by Ursula K. LeGuin. Science fiction novels looking at sex and gender? Apparantly my theme for the year. I’ve never been much of a sci-fi reader, but I’ve seemed to grab quite a lot this year.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Dream Theater. Good God, how did I ever live without them? ‘The Count of Tuscany’ has to be one of my favourite songs of all time, and there are so many more that are absolutely astounding. I’ve been listening to quite a lot more metal this year than in years past, and a great portion of that has been thanks to my listening to Dream Theater.
28. What did you want and get?
I gradu-ma-tated! And I got a job! And I got to share an incredibly intimacy with Logan, without damaging my relationship with Bryan at all. In fact, it has done nothing but strengthen what Bryan and I already have.
29. What did you want and not get?
I wanted Porter to be a Guide Dog. He didn’t even get to the first part of the training, because he failed his medical examination. My one-year-old puppy has cataracts! Looking back on it, it makes quite a lot of sense– he was terrible at hide-and-go-seek, would always stare intently at people, and seemed to key in on moving objects more than a normal dog. As my apartment building doesn’t allow dogs, Porter now lives happily with a family in San Fransisco, but I still miss him terribly.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Oooh, let me see. ‘Inception’ was quite fantastic. Did ‘Avatar’ come out this year? Was that last year? That was also a fantastic movie. I think I saw it near five times in theatres. Pixar didn’t really come out with anything new– they’re always my favourite. Hrm. Not a big year for movie-going for me, really.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 21 and, surprisingly, did not get drunk as is typical. I had a big party at Bucca di Beppo, and we sat at the table with the Pope. Afterwards was park-in-the-dark, which was immeasurably fun. After a particularly intense round of Sardines, the whole party wound up crammed together in a hedge, and discussed philosophy and deep thoughts. An amazing evening.
32.What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Porter graduating Guide Dog school.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Oh, it was awful. I think the more time one spends in college, the less one cares about one’s appearance. At least this is what I’ve found to be true between me and my friends. I would pretty much throw on a T-shirt and jeans, not even bother with my hair or putting in contacts or anything… Super lazy mornings.
34. What kept you sane?
Bryan. Porter while he was here. Logan, when he entered my life. The amazing friends that always surround me.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I guess I’d have to go with Brad Pitt, considering how much I tell people that he gets my vote for ‘sexiest man alive.’ Guys, I think it’s time to own up to the fact that I’ve failed as a lesbian.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I’ve been so frustrated with the state of the world lately. It seems like every time I turn on the radio or read a newspaper, there has been some bombing linked to some assassination where some large number of innocent bystanders are irreparably harmed. I wish the hate in the world could begin to subside.
37. Who did you miss?
Well, that is pretty clearly a no-brainer. I’ve missed Logan, whenever he is not here. It is like there is a hole in my soul.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Ah! Also one of the easier questions here! LoganLoganLogan!
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.
Persistence is the key. Optimism will always triumph (at least for me). Love fully, and life will reward you.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
When I am alone
When I’ve thrown off the weight of this crazy stone
When I’ve lost all care for the things I own
That’s when I miss you, that’s when I miss you, that’s when I miss you
You who are my home
You who are my home
And here is what I know now
Here is what I know now
Goes like this
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, in your love, in your love
-Orange Sky, Alexi Murdoch
