Music Survey

Stolen from ELF Radio .

1. WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU OWNED (BOUGHT FOR YOU)?

Growing up, my family never had a lot of money so I never had any records bought for me.  I was probably about 11 when I got my first tape and sadly enough, it was Debbi Gibson’s Out of the Blue.

2. WHAT WAS THE FIRST CD YOU EVER BOUGHT?

Auchtung Baby, U2…what was that…92, 93?  That’s the first time I bought a CD.

3. IF YOU HAD SOMEONE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX COMING OVER AND YOU WANTED TO IMPRESS THEM, WHICH CDS WOULD YOU HIDE?

I would probably hide N*SYNC’s No Strings Attached.  Yes, I know…cheesy as hell, but I used to love Bye bye bye, so I had to buy it.  Oh and the Spice Girls!! UGH!  I have no idea why I bought that CD.  But those are probably my only two CDs that I’m ashamed of.

4. IS THERE A SONG THAT REMINDS YOU MOST OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?

I didn’t listen to any American popular music when I was a young kid because my parents never listened to it.  So, Rabindrasangeets, especially ones I used to sing are the ones that remind me of my childhood.  Bon Jovi and Debbi Gibson and Tiffany remind me of my pre-teens.  Big Hair Bands remind me of my early and mid teens and Grunge reminds me of my late teens and early 20s.

5. IF YOU COULD SPEND A NIGHT WITH TWO MUSICAL ARTISTS – ONE FOR THEIR MIND AND THE OTHER FOR THEIR BODY – WHO WOULD THEY BE?

Bono for his mind, Jon Bon Jovi for his body! 🙂

6. IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT SONG WOULD PLAY OVER THE FOLLOWING:

LOVE SCENE: Hmmm…for a romantic love scene, I’d have to say Until by Sting.  For a sexy love scene probably something like Red Light Special by TLC.
DRIVING SCENE THAT CONSISTS MAINLY of FLASHBACKS AND LOVE LOST: REM’s Everybody Hurts
DYING SCENE: May it Be by Enya

7. IF APPLICABLE, NAME A SONG OR CONCERT THAT MOVED YOU TO TEARS:

Never had a concert move me to tears but can think of a few songs.  Butterfly Kisses by whoever sings it…it always makes me cry because of the relationship I don’t have with my Dad.  A Bengali song called Tumi Amar Ma (You are my mom) that always makes me cry because I feel like I’ve been a disapointement to my mom.  And Puddle of Mudd’s Blurry used to make me cry because it reminded me of B and because after it all ended, I realized how perfectly the lyrics really fit our relationship.

8. WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU ARE HAPPY? SAD? ANGRY?

Happy: I can listen to anything when I’m happy but that’s probably when I listen to the most upbeat stuff like Bhangra and pop/dance music.
Sad: That’s when I pull out stuff by John Mayer, Norah Jones, Damien Rice, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette…and anyone else who’s lyrics I feel like I can totally identify with.

9. NAME ONE MUSICAL ARTIST YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE BANISHED:

Just one?  I say Britney Spears

10. NAME ONE MUSICAL GENRE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE BANISHED:

Cheesy bubble gum pop

11. NAME A SONG YOU WOULD RATHER HEAR NEVER AGAIN:

I’ll Make Love to You by Boys II Men…UGH!!!  My roommate in college used to keep it on repeat and to this day when I hear it, I want to pull all my hairs out and poke my ear drums out!

12. WHAT NOW-DEFUNCT BAND WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SEE REUNITE (LIVING OR DEAD)?

The Beatles!!

13. NAME AN ALBUM THAT IS PERFECT ALL THE WAY THROUGH?

Perfect is a strong word…I don’t think that really exists.  Though there are quite a few CDs I own that I can listen to all the way through.  Most of those are Greatest hits albums that I own…like Beatles, Bon Jovi, U2, REM…

14. MUSIC YOU LIKE THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED A GUILTY PLEASURE:

N’SYNC, Destiny’s Child…any kind of cheesy pop.

15. IF YOUR MUSIC COLLECTION WAS ABOUT TO GO UP IN FLAMES, WHICH FIVE CDS WOULD YOU SAVE?

UGH!! Only 5??  I don’t think I can choose…I’d have to go down with my CDs!

16. IS THERE A SONG THAT DESCRIBES YOU OR A SITUATION YOU’VE BEEN IN SO WELL THAT YOU COULD HAVE WRITTEN IT?

Oh yes!!  John Mayer’s Why Georgia describes my life PERFECTLY right now…quite freakishly actually…right down to living in Georgia…up 85.  Blind Melon’s No Rain is also quite perfect but probably fits me better from when I was in high school and the video with the girl dressed up as the bee fit my life in a freakishly perfect way too.  There’s actually a bunch of stuff by John Mayer that freaked me out when I first heard it because I felt I could have written those songs…Love Song for No One and 83 two others.  And then like I mentioned above…Blurry fits my relationship with B to a T!  The freaky thing is that I never really listened to the lyrics before I thought of it as "our song" because we bonded over it until it all ended between us and then I was freaked out by how perfectly the lyrics fit.

17. WHICH UNDERRATED ARTIST DESERVES MORE ATTENTION?

Damien Rice.  I don’t even think most people have heard of him…at least not the people I know.  He’s so freakin amazing!!!

18. HAS A SONG OR ARTIST CHANGED YOUR LIFE IN ANY WAY? IF SO, HOW?

Hmmm…I can only think of one artist that would be on the level of changing my life…that would be Bon Jovi.  I discovered them when I was 10 and fell in love instantly.  Then I moved away from New Jersey and since they were from Jersey as well, I always associated them with "home" and somehow they can to represent "what could have been" for me.  They aren’t the greatest band in the world and their lyrics can be cheesy, but they have been and probably always will be my all time favorite band.

19. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SOUNDTRACK?

I actually don’t own a lot of soundtracks.  My favorite one is City of Angels…it’s got a lot of good songs on it.

20. BEST MUSIC-RELATED MOVIE:

Can’t think of any pop song related movies…but as far as musicals go, I LOVE Moulin Rouge and  Phantom of the Opera.

21. WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM BAND BE?

That’s too hard.  There are too many lead vocals and lead guitarists that I can think of.

22. FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME:

Right…like I can ever just pick one!  There’s no way!  It all depends on my mood.

23. FAVOURITE SONG FOR THE MOMENT:

James Blunt’s You Are Beautiful, Alanis Morrissette’s Crazy, and Howie Day’s She Says.

24. CUR

RENT FAVORITE RADIO HIT:

Don’t Cha (Did I even spell that right?) by the Pussycat Dolls!  Yes, another totaly guilty pleasure….but I hardly ever listen to the radio these days.

25. DO YOU SING OR PLAY ANY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS?

I used to sing….I was in choir from 4th grade to 12th grade and used to take singing lessons when I was like 10 and 11.  But since high school, I haven’t sang at all except by myself in the car.  I used to be pretty good…but without practice, my voice sucks now!  I took guitar lessons for a few months when I was like 14 and then quit that summer when we went on vacation but never picked it back up when we came back.

Ok, I’m adding a question for any one that decides to do this too….

26.  Name your favorite artists.

The Beatles, Bon Jovi, U2, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gin Blossoms, Matchbox Twenty, No Doubt, Live, Goo Goo Dolls, Madonna, Maroon 5, Evanescence, Sarah Mclachlan, Norah Jones, John Mayer, Old 80s New Wave, 80s hair bands, Les Miserables, Damien Rice, Howie Day, Lorena McKennitt, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette,

I would have loved Alanis Morrisette’s version of Crazy, except… the original is so much better. You know, i don’t know of many Bon Jovi songs…. except that one that was mix-mashed by Orbital, of course. ^__^

Happy New year to you too…. So what did you do? I have to agree with you that a lot of people don’t know about Damien Rice….

January 2, 2006

I could live happily without ever hearing any Boys II Men song!

January 4, 2006

i don’t think i knew you were a a U2 fan!! I think Bono is one of the sexiest men ever….not just because he’s hot…but because of his political views, his compassion, his drive, he’s still married to his wife, he’s down to earth…etc….and i have the best of cds from the 80s and then the 90s…both with Bsides…and oh my gosh, i almost drool when i listen to them. Sunday Bloody Sunday is one

of my all time favorite songs!!! And you’re funny….’butterfly kisses because of the relationship i don’t have with my dad’?? That sounds like something i would say. 🙂 Not so much my dad anymore (we’ve come a long way recently) but more my childhood parents/brother. It’s sad but interesting to think about with it in hindsight. —
