I give up.  I decided that to take care of the snail overpopulation, I could buy a betta and stick him in a smaller tank and feed babies to him.  It IS a hearty fish, no?  I guess not, as he was dead when I arrived home tonight.   I called the place and I can exchange him, but I didn’t feel like rushing down there tonight and doing it before the fish got too gross.  So I tossed him.  Any ideas from any fish people on a good fish in just a little area that can eat tiny snails that will actually live?  I can see about four forming that will be out soon!!

Kooky had her first day at preschool today.  She cried when I left, and I think that was largely in part due to another girl a bit older losing her mind just before.  I cried too, and made a quick entrance as the normal goodbyes were not happening.  When I called an hour later, they said she calmed down within minutes and ate well and was having a blast.   I got there to pick her up, and the tots were in the back room having story time.  I watched quietly for a moment, until a little boy pointed me out to Kooky.  She ran over, but not urgently like she wanted out of there.  The teacher complimented her and asked if she had been in day care before.  She said that Kooky was wonderful and settled in very quickly.  We left within a few minutes, but she was having fun watching all of the kids playing and seemed pretty happy.  I think that she’ll do fine.  It takes a few minutes longer to get home, but we still had time for dinner and playing.   She was in a great mood tonight.

J is brilliant.  He bought a small speaker and attached it to one of our half working MP3 players and loaded it up with kids music.  She LOVES it.  We bring it in the car and give it to her, and she sits and listens to her songs and sings a little.  She is starting to make requests for some songs now.  I ordered CD’s for her today-Dora, The Backyardigans (love that show), and Jacks Big Music Show Season 1.   I also have a few watched on Ebay.   I am so glad that she loves music and want to push that a bit more.  T made her some CD’s from their collection, but it was not the greatest songs.  Kooky was asking for Belle Belle (T’s dog) tonight.  I said that she was bye bye and that she had moved to another house, and that we might be visiting for T’s daughter’s birthday in March.  J said he does not want to drive there, as it is about an hour and a half.  I would though.

Get a clown loach as they just LOVE snails and are the best fish for this problem. I don’t think bettas eat snails from memory, mine certainly doesn’t. You can get some medicine that you put in the tank and it kills the snails. It’s so cool how kids love music, Miss Fidgets goes to sleep with songs on her cd player, has done for nearly 2yrs and now as soon as the 1st song starts, she just unwinds.

Bettas don’t eat snails and they are generally very hardy as long as you condition the water and feed them just a few pieces of food a day. I agree with Kiri….a clown loach would be a good choice. =)

RYN: All tropical fish need air and filters unless you want to change the water regularly and have lots of plants in the tank. Does Kooky really like them that much, she probably wouldn’t miss them if you got a substitute pet and sold the fish. I had a gerbil as a young kid, easy to look after and fun to watch, but at Kooky’s age anything will grab her attention.

Awww…first day of school! Sounds like it went pretty well. If you want to get rid of the snails, go to the pet store and get snail killer. Freshwater puffers eat snails, but they need the whole setup: filter, pump, air, etc. The snail killer sounds brutal, but it works and doesn’t affect the fish.
