Sign Language

I took 4 years of sign language courses, 2 years in highschool, then 2 years in junior college. I’ve always wanted to go into the interpreting field. Not only does it make mega money, but I love the deaf culture. It’s so interesting and fascinating and I just love the people and the beauty of their language. I also had a desire to teach at the deaf school in Riverside, one of the few schools in California devoted to the hearing impaired children. I still have that dream, but it’s less attainable than it used to be. I still need to get certified, and since it’s been so long, I want to retake my last two classes to refresh myself.

Anyhow, at my job, the city is supposed to provide American Sign Language interpreters to all deaf respondents. I’ve only seen 3 deaf people, and only 1 has had the interpreter. The other two, one that came in today, I have interpreted for. It’s so exciting, and embarrassing… and just a great experience over all. I’m not supposed to do it, I’m not certified and I won’t get paid, but we really don’t have another option if the person doesn’t want to reschedule. I’m not that great, but it was so fun. I didn’t understand some things, and it exhasperated the man, but overall, I did well. It makes me want to do it more… I just love sign language!!!! aaaaAAAAaaaa

I’m so wierd today. Damn hormones.

yay for you! it’s funny how handy those little things we know how to do come in.

That is so aweosme hun…what a rewarding job to have! 🙂 RYN: LOL I do the same thing…if I am going over the speed limit and they tailgate me…I drop down to the speed limit and watch them get really mad. Usually they lay off then because they know I am messing with them!

that is soooo cool! i’m jealous. i so want to speak to people in a way other than english. you so need to work on getting certified. making big bucks and being happy…sounds like everyone’s dream to me. make yours come true!

It’s a dream? GO FOR IT! You can do it, and you love it! WHat’s stopping you except yourself?

what has always fascinated is how sign language has its own “dialects” or “languages” just like spoken language.. i love watching sign language and the movement of it.. it’s beautiful. i have seriously considered learning.

That is awesome…I took ASL for a year in college…I don’t remember anything now, darn it. You should so persue your dream! That would be awesome to be doing something you love.
