My Uneducated Harry Potter Review
I have not read a single syllable from a Harry Potter book.
I’ve often wanted to, but it’s just never happened. I assume that one day I will, since I like the genre of writing and it doesn’t matter that I’ve seen the movies because I know books are always different and most of the time BETTER.
But anyway, with that said, I have seen all previous movies and I consider myself a fairly good movie watcher… in that I can take the goods and the bads in a movie and be pretty fair about my assessment.
So this Saturday I took my children, brother and boyfriend to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. (as mentioned, I got us all in for the price of one adult ticket, which was pretty awesome!)
First of all… the title made no sense. It really REALLY made no sense. Yes, there was a potion book with the name in it and it turns out Evil dark haired wizard guy (cuz I will probably spell his name wrong and make HP purists angry…Snapes? whatever…) is the Half Blood Prince… but WHY IS THE MOVIE NAMED AFTER SOMETHING THAT SEEMED SECONDARY AND TRIVIAL?
It really did. I might have missed something, but the book, while Harry carried it around and cheated with it… it didn’t seem like it was the focus of anything going on. The part where he went to hide it took me off guard, i was like "why?!" he hadn’t used any potions for evil had he? I just didn’t get it. Maybe I missed something, but that part was weird. Also, it didn’t really even show them trying to find out who the Half Blood Prince was outside of a few passing mentions. It was just weird and threw me off and I wish it had been called Harry Potter and the Crazy Hormonal Shift of Power… or something…
The movie seemed mostly about the emotional / romantic development of the characters. Sure, they have reached the age of hormones and insanity… but seriously. It was like they wanted to see how much kissing they could get into the movie without making people lose their minds.
It was cute and funny at some points, but to hear my admittedly perverted boyfriend say "giggety giggety" repeatedly throughout was enough to make me wonder what the hell they were thinking.
I guess I just felt like the entire movie was jumpy. It didn’t flow and it seemed very "cut and paste"… and the good parts seemed to just be slapped on wherever they might fit without enough around them to make them work. Like… when they get back to school after winter break and suddenly Dumbledore is back and showing another memory, it just seemed weird and I had to take a few minutes to think if it was a flashback or what.
I dunno.
And what was up with Hermoine getting drunk? That part was sorta funny…
I think the movie is about as coherant as my review of it! ha ha.
On a 4 star scale, I’d give this one 2.5 stars. I liked it. I’ll buy it (to keep my collection alive) and it had some good parts that made me say "ok, this is worth some time to see… (like the dumbledore fire water zombie death apocalypse! yayah!!!!!)… but I was disappointed.
I can only imagine how book fans felt, especially with the deletion of what would have probably been the most exciting part of the film… so yeah.
I guess the previous movies really just had a better story line that was consistent all the way through. I felt like this was just so jumpy… I left the movie feeling a little confused like someone had hit me over the head with a broomstick or something…
I’m hoping they redeem themselves with the next one.
And really Hermoine… jump Rons bones already.
jeesh.
hmmmm well in the book they went into it a bit more with the book i haven’t seen the movie yet but harry is a half-blood too and he had thought i think that the book was someone elses like more important or his dad or something i think… and in the end ron & hermione do get together!! bow chica bow wow

exactly. if you didn’t read the book, you had to have been lost a lot…they definitely assumed that you KNEW things already which sucked…none of the other movies has done that. AND if you did read the book, it sucked because they switched things around for no apparent reason and the feel of the movie and the feel of the book are just entirely different. i was majorly disapointed.i’m re-reading the book now to get the ugly taste out of mah eyes!

I don’t read it and I don’t watch the movies, but I have a few friends that have done both. They were all disappointed with this one.

My kids were disappointed as well.

You didnt mention that it was like 80 hours long. Or felt that way at least.

I only read the first book & I wasnt too impressed… I wish I had been. :/ Hope the kiddos enjoyed it though.

Well, the reason he hid the book was because of that spell that cut Malfoy all up – it was made up by the half-blood prince in the book, so I guess that’s the ‘evil’ part. I don’t remember Hermione getting drunk.. haha! I can’t remember a damn thing that happened in the book, so I wasn’t disappointed or anything. I’m easy pleased, though. I think maybe it should have been 2 parts so

they could fit everything in and stop the whiney whiney fans.

It wasn’t my favorite HP movie, but I definitely feel that people who don’t read the books will have no idea what is going on in the movie. That’s why I read the books first! They’re 100x better, seriously.

I never understood why they didn’t make Hermoine Harry’s girlfriend. I don’t know much about HP. I watched the first two movies and was done with it. I think I just got bored.

disagree. best movie yet of the series. promise! but without having read the books (or book), i’m sure it would not have as much depth. (i’m a huge fan. i’ve read all the books about 100 times and own/read all the books ABOUT the books.) it’s a sickness. so, hello again stranger! (i’ve changed my name since i noted last.) [:

SO upset about the movie. I dunno though, after Goblet of Fire I have sworn off the HP movies. If you were to read the book, I would be able to hear you go “OOOOOH, I get it now!” all the way to Houston. They spent waaaaaaaaay too much time on the ‘snogging’ and not enough on the arching story line.
