endosymbiotic theory

Mitochondria are unusual among other organelles because of their containing ribosomes and their own genetic material. Mitochondrial RNA is circular and has characteristc variants from the standard eukaryotic (complex celled organism) genetic structure. Eukaryotic cells include standard plant and animal cells, while unicellular bacteria are referred to as prokaryotes. It is now widely believed that mitochondria were once prokaryotic endosymbionts (symbiosis between two organisms, except within one cell), and have since been integrated into the human organism despite originating as independent bacteria. A common explanation for this is that mitochondria colonized the ancient precursor to eukaryotic life.

Mitochondria manufacture adrenosine triphosphate, which is used as a source of energy within the cell.

Various diseases have been thought to find root in mitochondria. Another interesting concept: Mitochondrial Eve

I’ve been reading about cellular biology and the progression of hominid evolution instead of writing my political science paper.

too weird – i just had a geology midterm today which included stuff on the beginnings of life, i.e. prokaryotes and how they became eukaryotic etc. riveting stuff. i think its pretty interesting how maybe a prokaryote somewhere engulfed some little guys who then couldnt function without him and ended up having sex with itself and producing more thus leading us to eukaryotes and eventually, humans!
