Swim
I’m walking a beach
But unlike the proverb I am walking alone
On this earth and sand
With water around
There is temptation
As the sun sets
The water cool
But lit like fire
To swim and meet the horizon.
I imagine the cool of night settling around
Waves that I fought
Carry me now.
Still I swim.
The horizon lies before me
Rolling away with every stroke
I’m tired.
Still I swim
The stars are bright, especially with no shore
And moon Long passed.
I ache.
Barely, but still I swim.
My face goes under
I peer into darkness
The nothing below
Cold and void.
As I sink away from stars
I swim no more.
