Five Years Later: September 11, 2006

It’s been five years since I woke up to begin hearing from people and the radio about  terrorists hijacking planes to crash into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.  Classes were cancelled since campuses and many public places were closed.  People were calling it Pearl Harbor II, and the attacks were the talk of the next few days.  Just hearing about it upsetted me enough, so I didn’t want to see it on TV since a picture is worth 1,000 words.

A friend called to say that he had a relative working near the Twin Towers, so he had been worried.  Now on its 5th Annviersary, I still regret not going over to comfort him.  He has been at war in Iraq for the last few years, and fortunately still e-mails me.

It is unfair that Osama Bin Laden and his terrorists are still out there, not getting what they deserve.  I wish they and Saddam Hussein had been the victims in the planes and buildings.

Some hackers decided to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of 9/11 by deleting entries from people’s diaries, creating 9/11 on the interent.  I lost some entries from that attack, and almost decided to give up.  However, I gradually changed my mind and restored and rewrote those entries.

It is obvious that the terrorist attacks on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 has beomce a historical event.  Now they even have a movie on it called World Trade Center.  The previews were enough to draw me near to tears, so I didn’t want to see it.  However, I realized that if I don’t see it, I’ll be perceived as a selfish and evil person who has too much time and doesn’t care about others.  That would not be good becuase I’m afraid people are seeing me as self-centered for going on with my life right after the attack.  I had also been afraid that people would think I had something to do with it due to my selfishness.

Even worse, personal problems bother me more than 9/11 or other disasters, which also proves how self-centered I am.  For example, I was more affected by school and MB problems instead of Hurricane Katrina and the many other hurricanes last year.  That means I’m only caring about myself and not others, because huge public problems are supposed to bother people more than small problems.  I caught a cold two days after the attack, September 13, 2001, which was probably a punishment for my ego and not going to my friend when he called.

Now, on the 5th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, I’ve had a cold for a few days probably as a punishment for my selfishness, arrogance, and irresponsibility.  I have never really done anything special to help the victims on September 11, and I still didn’t this year because of school.

There is some fault in the logic of your thinking, hun. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to see a particular movie or to be reminded of certain events. It does not make you self-centered and certainly not irresponsible. It does nobody any good for you not to take care of yourself. As for people thinking that you might have had something to do with the disasters because public problemsaren’t bothering you as much as personal problems, that makes no sense at all. 9-11 was the work of religious extremists. You’re an ordinary sistah, darlin, with an ordinary life. It would never occur to anyone in their right mind that you had anything to do with religious extremists, let alone with the attacks! The best way for ordinary people to honor the victims of September 11 is to go on with our ordinary lives: school, work, worship, relationships, however we would have lived if the attacks had not happened. It is our ordinary lives that extremists hate. The best way to honor the victims is to spite the extremists. Go on, dear, enjoy your life: take care of yourself and your matters, look at the sky and don’t let other peoples’ perceptions rob you of your freedom.

AMEN! to the last noter. God is full of GRACE! That is what his love is all about. U didn’t do any thing affect 9-11 or these awful, freedom hating terrorist. They are the way they are BECAUSE they do not believe in the GRACE I spoke of earlier. All we can do is live our lives & PROTECT the freedoms our founding father’s set out for the U S of A in the constitution. As long as we stick to ourguns we will be victorious. Hugs!

First off, thanks for the note and it’s awesome to find someone else who has read the Tillerman series. Second, cheer up and stop living a life of regret. We’ve all done things in our lives we aren’t proud of but thinking about them won’t fix them. You didn’t cause 9/11 and if anything you probably got sick because you were stressed out. Stop worrying and live in the present! 🙂
