Green Eggs and Ham
Dear friends, I have returned! I know you are all veritably erupting from your skins in sheer excitement over this rarity of an entry. I shall attempt to make your sacrifice of time worthwhile.
Today, in case you were unaware, is the birthday of one Dr. Seuss. Such an occasion is the source of a great deal of excitement among young students. There is the occasion of a usually authoritative individual dressing up as a Cat in a Hat. This flight of fancy continues with the Cat in the Hat visiting our classrooms to read to our children. Today, however, was one of those days. A day that shall not be soon forgotten.
To begin with, I was fighting with my bed and running rather late for work. My bed insisted I had not been spending enough time in its benevolent embrace. Stubborn enough to ignore my insistence that yes I did have to get up, and now. The cause was quickly picked up by my favorite little philosopher. He, however, felt that it would be much more efficient to simply trip me and thus ensure my injuries kept me from leaving the apartment. Leave I did however apologizing profusely to a rather offended feline on my way out the door. Traffic pled a strong case, but at long last I arrived at my final destination. I promptly wished I had not arrived at all.
It was soon revealed that late last night/ early this morning. Some (excuse my language) fucking assholicaly selfish bastard chose that as the night to steel copper and destroy a light pole in the process. The result was that my school and a small area around it was without power. This is inconvenient in normal situations. It is highly convenient when you consider that the forecast for our power being restored was between 4 and 8 hours. It is even less convenient when you consider that every single toilet and urinal in the facility is of the automatically flushing variety. This caused all but two student toilets (which were randomly connected to our emergency generators) inoperable. It took a hour to do a bathroom break for kindergarten this morning. Thus did my day begin, and thus did it continue. I had no aid this morning since one of our other teachers was out. My challenge this year melted down completely within 15 minutes of arriving in the classroom. Hitting walls, kicking walls, screaming throwing chairs, we moved from one time out spot to another in an attempt to keep him and the school safe. We ended up in the hallway outside the bathroom, where he began banging his head against the sink with as much force as he could muster. At such actions I can no longer render fake ignorance a viable response, and must call for an administrator.
The power was finally restored at noon. For the record, that’s 4 hours and 15 minutes without power.
I don’t think I need to tell you I am… tired.
In other news, I was informed yesterday at the faculty meeting that I have been selected as ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher of the Year for my school.
