Iraqi Voters

This is not an entry about whether or not we should be in Iraq, frankly, we went and we can’t change that.

This is an entry about the elections held Sunday in Iraq.

When I heard that Iraq had their elections and that 60% of the people voted, I was glad.

When I heard the recordings of people in the streets…women in the streets of Iraq, cheering for joy because they were able to vote, I was excited.

When I heard of the Kerds (sp) in France who were able to vote and actually have a say, I was elated.

But…when I heard of the 44 deaths of people going to the polls in Iraq, I was humbled. I had to wonder, would 60% of Americans go to the polls if they knew there was a good chance that a suicide bomber, I doubt it. According to infoplease.com’s almanac, there hasn’t been 60% voter turnout here in America since 1968.

And when I realized that, I was sad. Sad that we have a gift that many find precious but we toss aside. Then again, we do that with alot of our precious gifts, don’t we. We don’t realize just how precious it was, just how much we wanted and needed it, until it’s gone.

I don’t like to say that I’m PROUD to be an American, because, for one, I was born American, it was nothing I acheived, but I am GLAD that I’m American. I’m glad I have the opportunities I do. As much as it’s abused, I’m still glad that I have a government that will take care of me and my children if I can’t.

Wow, this entry went in a direction I hadn’t planned, but if you don’t mind, I think I’ll leave it there.

Please, no notes griping about America, I know we have our faults. And no notes griping about people who gripe about America because they have a right to their opinion.

Thank you.

You’re right — we in the US take voting for granted. We make up silly excuses about why we couldn’t make it to the polling place or gripe about having to wait a few minutes in line. ~

I agree with ya sis , as you know my excuse but still no excuse at all but hey I dont’ like to vote since I get tired of scandle nor broken promise . But I do believe they try their best to do their job. I dislike Bill Clinton period . Oh well hope we have better president sooner or later…MG

I enjoyed reading your views…so true.

i know i go vote even when maybe i should’nt because i am not as informed as i should be and i like to think i would even if it meant danger but i would’nt bet money on it. i was mad i couldn’t vote for kennedy because i was too young. but to quote gerry moore. if you didn’t vote don’t complain. if you did complain all you want because you were part of the outcome. that is not the right comment..

Yeah — I was pretty awed by the voting in Iraq. I was expecting a very low turn out and was really happily surprised. I hope that this is a psychological turning point for the country. I can only suspect that they voted because they feel that they have a lot at stake. I guess a large percentage of American voters don’t feel that they have that much at stake.

RYN: Breeding. It’s all to do with attracting a mate. The bright colour attracts the females. In nature, it seems that more often it’s the male that dresses up to attract a mate. :)wren (nsi)

COPD = Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. There are several conditions that fall under the category of COPD. It can be as slight as asthma or as serious as emphysema. I was a teenager during the 50Â’s and we all smoked. Thanks for asking?
