Projects / Game Day
Saturday was the big home game against LSU. It was a late game not starting until 7:00 p.m. I started out the day early heading to Homo Depot before things got too crazy. I needed to get some lumber and odds and ends for this latest project.
Arrg…. a lot of prep work needs to be done. There was some drywall tape that had bubbled out that needed to be repaired along with a bunch of popped nails.
Before I do the main room, the bathroom will get a make over. I have paint left over from the downstairs bath I did after retiring from Corvette. Pretty much all I’ll have to provide is the elbow grease. The shower curtain is so ugly. Because this hangs at an angle I had to hem it up so it would drop right. Not really using this bathroom it did not matter that much. Now it does! I will have to break down and get a decent looking curtain. How I hate shopping for that kind of thing. This current shower curtain came from the big yard sale of 1998. A group of us combined our stuff for a huge sale that fall. Tommy and Lee had bags of clothes, shoes, and linens they were getting rid of. Those boys spent more money on clothes. Even after selling much of what they had, I went away with bagfuls of designer clothes getting first pick before the thrift store. It was years before I had to buy socks or underwear. I’m still wearing the sport coats and shirts from them. They had small feet so I could not use any of their track shoes. If we had the same size foot I’d never have to buy track shoes again. Bags of shoes went to the thrift store.
Saturday afternoon was spent gluing up the shutter panels. The wood is that real dark 1970’s era finish that was so popular with the heavy pine furniture. I’m hoping that dark will contrast well with the with white painted window trim. I don’t want to paint or do any refinishing on the shutters.
Once I get the drywall patching done the ceiling will get painted. Then I’ll tape off the trim and paint the walls, and finally the woodwork. When this “side” of the upstairs is done, then I’ll concentrate of the opposite end which originally housed the kitchen area. I sold the electric stove from this upstairs at the yard sale. The upstairs refrigerator was moved into the kitchen as the other refrigerator that was supposed to be included with the sale of the house was sold at the house sale the kids had.
There is a low sloping area which separates the kitchen and sleeping area. This is a dormer which ends up at three low windows. When I first looked at this house in 1996 the student living here had a mattress in this spot. If I were younger I could relate. Not at my age! LOL! Also, I have cracked my head too many times where the dormer joins the main sloped ceiling.
I really need to get this project finished up and organized by next spring to allow me rent this space out for games next season. It is unreal what fans will pay to be walking distance to the stadium. Ideally I’d want older alumni who would not tear the place up.
It feels good to have projects to work on again. It is not like they were never there; I needed to get the motivation.
Things were crazy in my neighborhood all day. The partying started early in the morning. There were hordes of Alabama fans streaming past my house all afternoon before the game wearing the requisite crimson red and black/white hound’s-tooth. By the time it started getting dark a lot of these people were pretty unsteady on their feet.
Game days have me feeling like the only sober person at a drunken orgy. Everyone is having so much fun where I can’t connect. I’ve never cared much for sports, let alone build my life around a team. College football is a religion in the south. Coach Nick Saban here at Alabama has a higher standing th
an Jesus.

Let me get off this computer and get to work.
The only sport that I’ve been able to connect with is baseball. I don’t religiously tune into the Phillies’ games, and the only bit of licensed merchandise I have is this little catcher figurine that at ex-boyfriend bought me, as a joke, seeing as how he was the first [and last] guy that I played “catcher” for. Ha-ha! Good luck with all that prep work! Now, prepare to be inundated with notes…

RYN: Thank you for your input! 🙂 Although I don’t tend to follow mainstream personalities, as you never know who their bosses are and if they’re even real or not- His name, alone, raises some red flags to me!- I did listen to Mr. Savage’s podcast. He’s very charismatic, and quick to deliver stories to callers about people whom I’m sure he’s never met. (Discussing news articles about people…

…whom you’re unfamiliar with is a pet peeve of mine. You have no tangible proof of whether it even happened the way it was reported to have occurred. It’s like high school gossip.) I don’t agree with a lot of what he says. And his conversation with Ms. Pulley was beyond depressing to me. If we can’t even settle on terms to use for gender and sexuality, how in the hell do we expect any…

…emotionally mature person to take us seriously? In regard to Mr. Santorum’s comments, why do you let them get to you? You know that you aren’t a pedophile or a dog ****er. Why give a bully the reaction that he’s looking for? That’s going back to that juvenile, high school mentality again, which is all we really know. Sure, we may have graduated that place, but we’re still there. As for the…

…narcissistic carelessness of my generation, what can you expect from a group of people who’s eyes are glued to screens 100% of the time? If they aren’t on the television, it’s the computer. And if it’s not that, it’s a damn cell phone. The only thing we know how to do is mindlessly consume that which is set before us. We don’t give a damn about the past, because that was then and…

…this is now. Heaven forbid we take a step back, appreciate our history, and actually learn something from it. As for the novel about the Stonewall riots, although I certainly respect Mr. Mordden for being a gay man who was alive at the time, I’d rather read or hear the account of someone that was actually there. Fiction is fiction. *Takes a breath* Phew! I think I’m finally done, now. 🙂

Whew, that is quite a project you are tackling! It sounds as if it has started well. I hope things go smoothly.

RYN: I’m sorry. My intention wasn’t to offend or upset you. To me, there’s a difference between regurgitating facts and sharing actual experiences. What I wanted was an open dialogue with someone of a different generation, who was willing to share his experiences with me and teach me something new. Thank you for your patience, however. I appreciate it. And I won’t press this with you any further.

i do like those shutters being at the window bottom. i fully understand the football fever thing….it’s so prevalent here and i get oversaturated seeing scarlet and gray on everyone much less the tailgating which is insane! people would start out at 0730 as i left work…..the thought of drinking that early..five hours before the game started! just left me weak hahahahah

Good idea to rebuild a house to get people to like pay for game day’s. I’ve heard there’s big money in that I can’t imagine fixing up a house thought, got no ability with that. My uncle built a house from scratch though, a log cabin type thing for him and my aunt, when they were married ryn I’ll have to check that out. Sounds funny, I mean, horrible 😉 I like biting and dark humour *shrug*

It’s lookin good tho I would spray those shutters white. You know me. Yes, that will rent out nicely to the over 40 crowd.

On weekends my Father sat glued to the TV, I could never understand the game or the interest. Tedious. It’s the only athletic event, where when there’s only 2 minutes left on the clock it turns out to a quarter hour.

Sports in America. What does it say about us? Don’t misunderstand, I used to be a Cincinnati baseball fan and definitely was swept into the Bulls excitement. Still, I can’t look the other way on the damage athletes suffer when they don’t get their degrees and the real dangers football players face from concussions. Did you see the Frontline on the NFL cover-up on brain damage? Insidious.
