How simple it seemed

on that balcony I was thirteen

at an airport

in the clear

of the night we stood with our hands

clasped the cool california breeze pushed

her hair across

outlines of her pale skin silhouetted

by the dancehall behind us

played a beat

from some foreign tune I still faintly recall

the lavender shampoo

as I tried desperately to

slow my breath

she gazed out past the balcony into the empty

airport runway

the strain of her hand clung desperately

to mine

So I arched her face toward me

held it there but missed my first attempt

As she turned her head so shyly

I tried again

and

we lingered tight with lips pressed

how simple it was

on that balcony I was thirteen

at an airport I’d never heard of in the clear

of the night
