Impatience Is My Virtue

My heart is full to burst,
see it runneth over onto the floor?
It’s thick, like paint. It coats my footsteps.
They lead to my desk.

Far off in the distance, I see my kids.
They jump. They run
They study hard and pass their tests.
They excel where others fail.
Oh! such wonderings I have over you,
whom I do know.
Some of you aren’t born yet.
Maybe some of you are being created right now
and I won’t see you for the next fourteen years.

But I can be patient.
I can stand here lecturing, smiling slyly,
knowing you are on your way.
I will wait for you.

My kids are of a select few.
Some will be slower, some will be like energy,
some will be desperate.
I will embrace you all and give you everything I have-
I will use my last dollar to purchase you a notebook and pen
to fill the world hidden behind your eyes
with all the color and imagination you can stand.

I am waiting for you, my first class.
