Interesting Possible Cultural Trend
here’s an interesting article in today’s Wash. Post….
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/10/08/culture_wars.html?hpid=topnews
Basically, the younger folks are apparently not as virulently set on certain issues like their older counterparts are.
Here’s a sample from the article:
"A majority of white evangelicals, ages 18-34, favor either same-sex marriage or civil unions, compared with a majority of older evangelicals who favor no legal recognition, the poll found. Six in 10 young Catholics say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, compared with half of older Catholics."
So, hopefully, the younger folks aren’t getting their knickers all in a bunch like older folks do. Even when they disagree with positions, they’re not nasty to folks with different views. In other words, maybe we’re not raising as many fanatics as our parents did.
thoughts, comments?

we are DEFINITELY not raising fanatics!

Lots of young Catholics I know reject the church’s views on gays and abortion. With the gays, they usually know somebody gay and don’t think there is anything wrong with them. With abortion you get the politically correct line of “I would never, but I’m not going to tell anyone else not to”. They consider themselves good Catholics but seem to consider those positions absurd. I see a lot less racism among young people too and they are more likely to get mad about it. It’s not all rosy, obviously. There are still plenty of rednecks with white-trash values. And I fear the backlash of conservative parents whose kids come back from college questioning their doctrine and indoctrination.

The slow evolution of humanity. I believe it’s happening- I’m sad I was born 40 or so years too late. How different my life would be if I were a youngster in these more open days. I find it all heartening.

or maybe now our fanatics have taken a more sneaky tactic and now toe the party line. we as a culture recent years have made a big deal out of poltical correctness and making nice in public. just because they give these answers to the public doesn’t mean they actually believe it. that’s just my take though.

All I can say is, YAY! Maybe the fanatics will eventually die out leaving level headed, sane people? We can but hope! And RYN: I figured that would happen, but let’s face it, it ain’t my kid. Oh, Ally’s gonna have such a good laugh at my expense when I start spawning!

This bodes well for the next generation. And we’ve said kids don’t think for themselves.. HA!

lol, maybe we ARE good parents! and ryn: thank you for explaining that to me. I have no transgendered people in my physical life, sadly. I was trying to relate transgender to gay… lesbian…. and yes, I went to horrible lengths to … hide. I guess I probably would not have realized… So… no wonder WE are such strong people, eh? Have a terrific day.

I think it’s a natural course of progression. As societies grow larger and more complex, each successive generation tends to be more liberal than the last. They have to be in order to deal with the variety you’ll see in such a large concentration of people. That said, there are occasional conservative “backlashes”, but those tend to pop up in response to a particular event. I’d be willing to

bet that were it not for events like 9/11 or administrations like the last several Republican presidencies, we’d be much more liberal than we are today. I think the 90’s was probably the heyday of social liberal progression, even though we’re still farther along today (generally) than we were ten years ago. So long as society continues to diversify, younger generations will be more & more liberal.

yeeha!!! good news indeed. apparently there’s some reason for hope at last out there!

I wear a size men’s 9 and my collection includes Rockports, Sketchers, other shoes of that style, various “dyke boots” and Nike Air and New Balance workout shoes. I’m a shoe whore- LOL- love shoes, but of that type style. Got any you don’t want? I’m looking forward to the day that we can meet and talk.It will be an honor.
