Lovesong Part II (Ch 4)

“Burton are you crazy?” Rhee hissed, but softly to not be heard, “Mr Jackson will positively kill uss if he catches us sneaking through his garden!”

“Don’t worry Rhee, he’s usually asleep by 8:30, and he’s getting ready to harvest anyways, so it’s not like he’s going to notice.” Kevlar replied, but also softly.

Deep within the rows of corn, towering in rows silently at attention, Rhree and Burton crouched down next to each other, their clothing Simple and well worn, but also well loved. Rhee was looking radiant in her dress that evening, her hair a darkened mass of curls highlighting her face. Her eyes were glittering and her face was flushed and bright under the deepening purples of dusk. off in the distance A lone dog would give the occasional half hearted bark, challenging with little energy whatever phantoms he contemplated chasing in the late summer evening.

Under the rows of corn, Burton leaned forward and kissed Rhee lightly on the cheek, then pulled back and smiled slightly, his eyes averted and his face flushed red from his blush. Rhee gave a brilliant smile and leaned back in to kiss him, but halted as Burton looked back up suddenly and moved slightly back at his suddenly serious expression.

“Gosh Burton, what’s – ”

Burton put his hand out, “I think I just heard a door open”

Rhee Started to get up, but Burton grabbed her arm lightly, “Hold still, maybe it was just the wi – ”

From the back porch of the house a booming voice rang out, startling the dogs and making both Rhee and Burton jump as well, “you kids! you’re out hiding in my corn again aren’t you?”

Rhee and Burton remained frozen for a moment then Burton hissed “Rhee! we gotta make a run for it!” moaning in quiet fear, Rhree started crawling to the edge of the corn field. Burton was right behind her and as he kept track of where rhee was going, a slow grin spread across his face as he could see the outlines of her body right in front of him. He glanced down with his face heating again, but within a few seconds peeked back up and whispered, “Oh my!”

Rhee glanced back, and catching his gaze, said in a low voice, “Buster, you are going to get it when we get out of here.”

Burton shruged helplessly and with a whispered smile replied, “What? I had to make sure I didn’t run into you.”

“Mmm hmm”

“You kids!” Came the yell from the yard as Mr Jackson stood at one edge of his corn, his hands on his hips. but his smile belying the sterness in his voice “Get here now or I’ll go over to your pa’s!”

Rhee started a bit and looked over at burton, wide eyed, “My pa would tan my behind and lock me away forever!”

“Nah, he doesn’t know who’s out here, let’s make a break for it once we’re in the trees over there we should be safe.”

With a crouch and scamper, Rhee and Burton made their way over into the woods. Then slowly they straightened up and walked deeper into the woods, trying not to make any noise as they worked further into the darkness. They walked for a few minutes in a comfortable silence before Burton spoke again “Hold up, Rhee, I know where we might go.”

With a nod from Rhee, Burton took the lead and began walking. “Rhee?” burton asked, “what do you think about what’s happening in europe?”
