WheelChair And I
"We Belong Together"
I felt handicapped today for the first time in my life. I went to petsmart to buy dog food for the dogs. As I walked up to the checkout I noticed the cashier was in a wheelchair. As I went to sign my card slip I noticed that this was one more place with a pen attached to the counter. On the right side. I’m sure whoever installs these things doesnt realize the the cord is too short and ackward for a left handed writer. After struggling to get the pen to reach, I threw it down in disgust and reached behind me to pick up my own, unattached pen, from inside my purse. As if to make me feel stupider the cashier pointed out the fact that the pen she provided me indeed worked by scribbling on the back of the slip. Yes but I’m left handed and it doesnt reach I told her. She gave me this look of understanding. I never considered being left handed handicapped until that moment, until a person who was obviously handicapped gave me a look of understanding and compassion for my plight.
Maybe that’s why they consider lefty’s to be handicapped. I never thought of it as so tho.

My sister is left handed and my 7-month old niece may be left handed as well. I wouldn’t really consider it a handicap, as much as ignorance by the majority, which is definitely right-handed. I can understand your frustration though. Paul is left-handed too actually.

My fiance left-handed and says he’s an “oppressed minority.” :-p While in college, he could never find a left-handed desk in classes.
