Starless Skies
Starless skies stare down on me as I walk the empty campus, looking for solitude. Everywhere is a remembrance, a memory waiting to overtake me. I push the thoughts away with my hand. Caught up in the beauty of the night you fail to notice the tear on my chin. It is never a test. How could you think that? This is how it just is. Always confusing and frustrating. You occasionally step into what I live with every day. And it really scares you. So maybe you aren’t ready for this. You keep telling me you are. I won’t let you in so easily. Did you notice the shooting star in the sky? It represents my life. Short-lived but exciting and fast. Nothing lasts forever, not even the warmth of your kiss. Even pain fades with time. So let go of my hand and get in your car. Light the cigarette you promised not to smoke and drive away. I’ll be gone if you return. Promise me you’ll forget me you said as you walked away. So don’t look back and don’t regret anything you ever said, except when you said I love you.
