Car Ride
He started the car as she finished her cigarette and threw it out the window. They pulled out of the parking lot.
“I’m sorry I was with Gabe all day,” he said.
“It’s ok. I figured you guys would hang out and thats fine. Didn’t bother me. Did you like my lounge friends?” She looked at him.
“Yeah, they’re cool. I can see how hanging out there gets boring real quick, but they are cool. Am I turning here?”
“Yeah, we’ll take Innis to get home.” The silence was almost comforting. “So what did you think of Tom?”
He answered quickly. “I didn’t like him.”
She laughed. “Why not?”
“I don’t know. Just a vibe.” He shrugged. “We kept trading glances, like whatever. He didn’t talk much.”
“He’s really shy. But he’s cool.” She looked out the window at the passing buildings. This was her life now. “What about Becky?”
“She’s really nice, but I can see how she gets annoying really quickly.”
“Yah, she is really sweet, but she just grates sometimes. She was really relaxed today though. What about Brendan?”
“He’s cool. I liked him.”
“He’s usually more hyper, but he…”
“…he was sick today. Yah, I could tell.”
“OK, so who else did you meet? Matt. What about Matt?”
He laughed. “I like Matt a lot.”
“I thought you would.” She was laughing with him.
“I can see why you like Matt too.”
“How? What do you mean?”
“The personality. His is one you like. I see a little of me and John Czarnecki in him.”
She laughed. “You’re right. I never noticed that.”
He looked at her and smiled. “He gives it right back to you which is what you like.” The light turned and the car pulled forward.
“Who else did you meet? The twins.”
“Yah they were cool. I like how you tell them apart by the gotees.”
“And the long hair. Brandon has long hair and wears a hat and Ryan has shorter hair. You don’t realize they are twins until they are standing next to each other.”
“Right. They are really cool.”
“What about Sandra?”
“Sandra?”
“The black girl.”
“Oh right. She’s really nice. She got a kick out of my impersonations. Especially my Schwarzenegger one.”
“Yah Paul does Arnold too. Its amusing.”
He changed into the voice. “Ja. Itz a gute ting.”
She rolled her eyes. “What about Annemarie? Blonde girl.”
“Ahh, I didn’t really meet her I did get to know her scarf pretty well. It looked good on Matt.”
“Yeah, it really did.” She laughed.
“With his blonde hair and jacket and sweater he really had it going on. And then he started with the voice, it was over.”
“Poor guy never had a chance.”
“But I liked everybody pretty much. They are cool.”
She smiled and they continued in silence.
