The shadow

I’m working on a bunch of new show ideas this summer. One of the things I’ve always been fascinated with is the multifaceted nature of the human mind. That we are not one “self” but a collection of competing and conflicting identities. I want to look at ways that the self could be physically divided — into the ego and the shadow. This has been dramatized before as Dr. Jeckly and Mr. Hyde. No doubt in other forms as well — please do let me know other examples as I am collecting them.

The catalyst for this has to do with the current fractured state of politics here and elsewhere. So while the series I’m thinking about will not be overtly political, it will build on Jung’s concept of the Shadow, and specifically shadow projection.

I love this phase of developing a new idea. I don’t have characters yet, just concepts. Once I know what I want to talk about, everything else sort of falls into place. What happens when the shadow takes control of someone who is rich and powerful?

I love Carl Jung and his interesting ideas.  I actually use his model of anima, animus, the Self, ego, shadow and much more as I write my novel.
