Get an electric car already

Okay, so I’m gonna get on my EV high horse for a minute. I’ve been driving an electric car since 2015. I remember when the EV 1 came out in 1996 and I knew then and there I wanted one. But I’m a tech guy and most people think that an electric car isn’t for them. It is for everyone.

My husband has a Kia Niro EV and I have a Chevy Volt Plug in Hybrid. I rarely use gas — just on long trips but honestly we could take his car given the network of fast chargers in California.

So why should you get an electric car:

1. The electricity you use works out to the equivalent of $1 per gallon gas.

2. Range has significantly improved. Most cars are capable of 200+ miles on a single charge. That’s going to cover 95% of your driving.

3. Rebates on new cars up to $10K in some states.

4. You will never put a single dollar in the pocket of a murderous Saudi royal, Russian dictator or Venezuelan tyrant.

5. You can buy a used EV for much less than you would think. (Under 20K in many cases).

6. SO FUN TO DRIVE. I kid you not. EV’s have instant torque. The only car I can’t outrun is a Tesla.

7. Emerging reverse charge tech means your car can power your house in a blackout.

I’m thinking about $7 per gallon gas and what that will do to most people in this country. If we had ever, ever, ever taken our energy policies seriously none of this would be happening. None of it because no one would be using gas. It’s not like this technology couldn’t have developed sooner. We waited until it was a crisis and even then only reluctantly funded research and development. We could have had this 22 years ago if the 2000 election had gone differently. But here we are. Do yourself a favor and ditch the gas car for an EV.

I don’t own a car and use either public transportation or I rideshare with my Caregiver.  I am VERY careful to combine outing activities to use the least amount of ancient dinosaurs.  I am all for getting an electric vehicle of my own when I move and when the prices go down.  They are RIDICULOUS now.

But I applaud you.  You are making a difference to the world.

You’re right.  My husband and I both have gas cars, but – we never go anywhere.  I swear – the last 2 pandemic years our combined gasoline bill has been under 300.00 for the both of us  (per year) .  But my next car is MOST DEF going to be all electric.  That’s the ONLY WAY out of our (our=USA) problems is perfecting alternative (meaning – not fossil fuel based) energy.

I’ve always wanted one, but I take A LOT of road trips, like, all the time, and the charge isn’t really fast enough to do that (I also live in California, but I travel everywhere). 🙁 I’ve thought about a hybrid, but they’re $$$$ (if I’m wrong, please point me to cheaper ones, if you can?). I would love to have freedom from gas, but I personally don’t think it’s that doable with my lifestyle. I do hope I’m wrong, though.
