Days 64 65 66 San FraNZisco …….

Have been too busy / tired to write over the last 3 days. So a little summary….

64 a busy little breakfast room at Super 8, right up on floor 6. Ok for me, but the lift has been out, so no good for the Oldies! I took some back to my room to let some guests have a seat. Checked out at 10 and took my bags up to my room at Sweden House, and then headed down to the Ferry Building. Not quite so buzzy as yesterday because there was no racing today.

Saw some street side displays illustrating what San FraNZisco was like before the 1906 earthquake, and immediately after. Fire was a bigger cause of death after the quake, and were some started deliberately to ensure an insurance payout?

Spent a bit of time at the Americas Cup village again, and then walked further on to Fisherman’s Wharf and enjoyed the local fish and chips, whilst listening to the street musicians. Bought some souvenirs, the walked on a bit to Hyde where I called it quits and caught the cable car back to Powell.

I do love the energy and crazy busy streets around this part of the city, although there were far too many encounters with homeless / beggars asking for change, seemed to be more around than last year, a difficult situation for me to explain in my head.

Did my laundry at last in the evening, luckily there was a laundrette right across the road. Slept so-so, in fits and starts as is my pattern these days.

65 grabbed a bit of brekkie on the way downtown, and then met up with my OD friend Velvet. This was so good to have someone to share today’s events with, and Velvet was such good company for me today. We were right there when Team New Zealand won both races to go 6 nil up in the series….first to 9 wins the Americas Cup. Lots of displays relating to the sailing, and I had another celebratory beer, a NZ beer, Moa. But it wasn’t that great tbh. Walked back to Market Street where we parted company, and later on I had a rather late dinner in a diner, bought some dessert in Walgreens and took it back to scoff at Sweden House, yummy ….

66 Friday the thirteenth. Today was going to be a quieter relaxing day… But it didn’t work out. Walked downtown and had a nice sausage and egg breakfast, then decided to walk following the cable car route to Hyde. And then it was…maybe I could walk all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge, and get some close up pics. And then it was like….wow there is the bridge so maybe I could walk over it.. So that’s what I did, and it was windy up on top so had to hold on to my hat! I got to the Marin county side, then turned around and walked back. By the time I got back to Sweden House on O’Farrell, it was a quarter to six! The Presidio was impressive, the old fortress area for defending the city from whoever….

Sooo.. 67 is moving day..gotta find somewhere to stash my bags, meet up with YAH and friend for lunch…and watch the races of course, then head to San Bruno near the airport….

Waving at you. //////// Yes, and the forts on the far side are even better. Yes, too, walking the bridge is a treat. I did it once. You sound really good but tired.

Wow I walked across the Golden Gate in 1969. Beautiful, perfect. Glad you did it too. You are a very good traveler. The not so nice Sweden House was sure handy to the city.

Loved reading this – brought back memories from a couple of years ago when we were there!! I wish now we’d walked across the bridge. You must be so tired, but what stamina you have! Hope you’ll be able to have a good rest when you return home.

woah, that is a huuuuuge walk! super impressive. So I was curious about your fire theory for the 1906 earthquake, and it turns out you were right about it, for some of the fires because people were told they’d only get insurance if fire burned the house, not if the earthquake damaged it. Other fires were caused by the gas mains being broken, and there’s a bit about a famous “ham and eggs fire” on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906_San_Francisco_earthquake fun reading. glad you got some food! 🙂
