Days 52 53 Icht ein bin Berliner…..

52 checked out of Rut and Ragners Hostel and walked in to the Central Train Station, stopping now and again to rest by the canal and also to have a nice mocha and pecan pie at Wayne’s Coffee House. Waited for a while at the station as I didn’t want to be waiting for check in over at Orestad which was where my next night would be spent. Got over there about 2 30 and checked in at Cabinn Metro. Another new contemporary design with small rooms, good enough for moi! Went out to look for dinner. Nearby is a huge shopping centre called Fields, but in the end I just bought a pasta salad and cheesecake from the supermarket and took it back to my room. There was heavy rain at one point, which I haven’t had much of all trip.

53 breakfasted in the hotel, really huge restaurant and enjoyed the usual continental breakfast, coffee and juice, bread rolls, cold meats, cucumber and capsicum and cheese. Funny how different are the English breakfasts, all cooked for you with eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes and fried bread.

Checked out and walked up to the train station and caught a train for Copenhagen. Found the bus departure place quite easily, and as I allowed plenty of time, I went in to the cafe and stocked up on snacks for the journey. The Eurolines bus was business class, lots of leg room, very smooth running, and not too crowded. And it was only $37 right through to Berlin. And after 2 hours, we stopped at a checkpoint, and what I first thought was immigration, turned out to be for the ferry across to Rostock. Surprise, nothing was said on the ticket about the ferry trip. It was a huge car / bus ferry and we all had to exit the bus and go up on the various decks. There were some good viewing areas on the upper decks, and as we disembarked, I noticed there were no ropes used to tie the vessel up, but a gigantic clamp comes out from the jetty and attaches itself to the boat!! Ok nearly 2 hours later we were in Rostock, and re boarded the bus and resumed our journey to Berlin. More rain, but dry by the time we arrived. I found an ATM and grabbed the first taxi off the rank for the last leg of today’s journey to the One80 hostel. I’m in a dorm with 6 rather noisy young Italian women!

Went out exploring Berlin. It’s a big city. Found a Middle Eastern / Italian restaurant and had a delicious pasta dish. I ordered it because it was number 69 on the menu. Just liked the number.

Ok the girls have gone out, my budgets balanced, I’ve gone into the ladies bathroom by mistake, it’s mighty hot here in the dorm….and alls right with the world once again….

What a wonderful trip you’re having. The ferry clamp and a hostel with six young Italian women. I hope they quiet down so you can get some sleep.

Nice. I like the ferry to Rostock (hmm or is it a different one that I’ve taken? Not sure. It’s the one the train drives onto!) Happy traveling… and I think you haven’t really been to Germany unless it rains while you’re there. But it always does so! =)

Just stopping by from Fire and Ice’s diary. 🙂 Not sure if you have been doing this already but my advice to you is to download your diary frequently while travelling. I was on a world trip in 2004 and had got most of the way through when the hacker attack happened – lost most of my travel entries, and it still hurts to this day! Hope you have a great time 🙂
