Days 34 35 36. Seacombe, Morecambe and Lancaster.*
34 My room at the Liver View hotel in Seacombe had a view across the Mersey to Liverpool, with the famous towers of the Liver Building, the 2 cathedrals, and the regenerated waterfront area all clearly visible. The Liver Building was once the tallest building in Europe. The hotel was built in 1924, and is run by a young couple, atmosphere very friendly with personal touches….lovely big English breakfast which was built in to the cost of the room. No lift though. So after brekkie (Monday) I set off on foot along the prom and walked in to New Brighton. 3.5 Kms. By now I had fully recovered from the Dublin race, so I felt a big walk coming on… And I got to my destination just before 3 having left the hotel at 9 am. But I did have a half hours stop in Liscard to look for my family’s grave in the cemetery, and to have a mocha and tea cake in a cafe. No luck with finding the grave. My destination was Upton and there my 92 year old Aunt Sheila lives independently, and she made us a cuppa and I told her all about the reunion. I reckon I walked 25 Kms easily. She is the last surviving sibling from 9 which included my mum. Takeaway curry pork for dinner, passable…
35 Checked out of Liver View and caught the ferry cross the Mersey. Walked up to Lime St station and caught a train to Wigan, changed at Lancaster and arrived in Morecambe around 2. The town is way past its heyday, being once a very popular holiday destination for people from the heavily populated areas of Lancashire…but now a lot of people go for the cheap holidays in Spain. Checked in to the Clifton hotel after a short walk. It’s also a very old hotel along the waterfront, and again, no lift. It’s small but comfortable, and the owners are Korean.
A lot of the buildings are boarded up, and for midsummer, there were surprisingly few people around. Walked around a bit, surprise surprise, and had a fish and chip meal at Sam’s cafe, not that good….
36 Lovely full English brekkie to start the day. Breezed around Aldi supermarket for a few goodies, then headed by bus to Lancaster. Met up with Angelsong and her hubby Rod, who entertained me lavishly at the local hostelry and then took me for a motor along the canal in their narrow boat. This was fun, a slow pace, a couple of boats passed us going the other way, and the canal took us across a couple of viaducts. Took the steerer (tiller) for a brief while, moored back at the side of the canal back in Lancaster, and started back to Morecambe around 4 as there was rain around…
A lovely day all round, and I even got my laundry done at a laundrette in Bare, just down along the prom from Morecambe.
Tomorrow, I am going to get a bus to the Lake District…but the weather forecast isn’t good, so I may not do any climbing.
We shall see….
I hope the weather holds for you. It was wonderfully sunny here today.
