Day 4…The Olympic Dream….Day 5 travel..
Not sure if this qualifies as competing in the Olympics, but the three of us took the cable to the top of the Sapporo ski jump, where, in 1972, Japan won their first medal in the winter Olympics. Actually they got first second and third. So when Ali, Chloe and myself did the simulation jump, I was surprised to be way behind the other 2. Must be in the way I was holding my bum! But then I got my own back in the cross country, and watched Ali keep out the opposition 5 to nil in the ice hockey. What a great venue…from the top you look out across the city of Sapporo, on a fine day you can see forever.
I was uber tired yesterday as it was day 2 of having the bug. Towards late afternoon, all I could do was shuffle along behind the other 2, stopping now and then to buy water from the vending machine, of which there are millions…
Just like Tokyo, everything is spotlessly clean and the people are spotlessly pretty, the women wear such colourful outfits, and their politeness shines through. I’m totally impressed with the subway (Metro). Auckland please take note. There is only a small population difference, about half a mil, between the 2 cities. We have to change our culture. Japan seems to be doing more than us in the area of conserving fossil fuels. So many bikes up in Sapporo too, just like Tokyo.
We finished off last night with games, Uno and Quiddler.
DAY 5
We walked to the bus stop this morning, and caught the airport bus, said sad farewells to Ali and Chloe, and flew down to Tokyo. Tonight was Hilton night, never stayed in one before. Well this one was not pricey (only NZ 90 bucks). and my room is large and well furnished. But it’s soo cold, cant seem to adjust the air conditioning. And there’s no milk. And there is a charge for the internet, and that is why I’m in the free Wi-Fi area of the restaurant!. Never one to pass up on free stuff!
..and just consumed the buffet to die for.
Ok better get some shut eye, up early tomorrow for my 8 30 flight to Zurich..
Au revoir..

If ever I got to go to Japan I would seek out the old portion where the real geisha are and try to find one just to look at her. I read a book written by an American sociologist who took on the life of a geisha for (her thesis? It’s been many years.) I have been fascinated with them ever since.

Oh yeah – the airconditioned buildings did me in. Its horrible when it’s about 15c outside so they put it up to about 40c inside… ugh. I don’t miss that. I got so excited when I worked out how to open a window somewhere.
