Bloodbank Heroes

“Dance like no one is watching,
Love like you’ll never be hurt,
Sing like no one is listening,
Live like it’s heaven on earth.”
~William Purkey

Okay, I’m absolutely knackered right now, so I’m not sure how this entry is going to turn out. I really don’t even feel like writing, but I know I need to. Yesterday, Vinnie and I went to donate blood for our campus blood drive. It was an interesting experience. I originally asked Manny if he would go with me and hold my hand like I used to make Big C do. However, Manny’s schedule and mine did not mix, so he couldn’t go and distract me while I was being a hero. This led to me asking Vinnie if he would go with me. He was willing and able, so yesterday after my internship of writing a bunch of press releases and public service announcements, Vinnie and I went and donated.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Vinnie went first and the guy who drew his blood was a hottie, think Alex from Grey’s Anatomy. The three of us joked around and they started giving me crap that I was nervous to donate. Well, once Vinnie was done, it was my turn. I’m not surprised, but Alex (we’ll just make it easy and call him that) couldn’t find my vein. It’s hard for people to find my veins and it’s even harder for them to hit them. Hence the reason I hate to give blood. Okay, so Alex wasn’t comfortable trying to get the line started so he asked another guy to do it. While they were working out the whole particulars, Vinnie talked to me and held my hand. Yep, Bella’s a big weenie.

Well, the guy gets the needle into my arm and I’m staring at Vinnie, “Did he get blood?”
“Yep.”
“You’re lying.”
“No, he’s getting blood.” Which is completely not true because I look over and see that there is no blood running from my arm to the tube. So four minutes and three trained workers later, they finally get the blood flowing and I’m good and bleeding. Alex sits down and starts chatting, there was definite flirting going on from both parties. It was interesting, I’d say fun, but I don’t think donating blood is fun. But in the end, Vinnie and I were heroes and that was a good thing.

Today however, I’m absolutely wiped out. I’m tired and feel completely useless. I’m achy and tired.  I managed to get a little more than 8 hours of sleep last night and I took a nap today, but I’m completely exhausted. I called the blood people because I was getting a little worried this afternoon, but they said that my iron was probably low and to eat iron rich foods. So I tried that earlier this afternoon, but it’s not doing much. My plan for tonight is to go to bed early and sleep in because I don’t have to go to my internship tomorrow. Then I’m going to get a massage. Hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow.

What else has been going on in my life? Met up with Terena and Niki last night for a bit. We went out for coffee, but ended up getting ice cream. I miss Niki, she is such a wonderful girl and I love hanging out and talking to her. I hope to spend more time with her in the next few months. However, I did realize that hanging out with Terena isn’t my idea of fun. She really doesn’t know how to talk about anyone other than herself. So it will be interesting to see where that friendship ends up.

This is my second week and I weighed myself from last week and I lost 4 pounds. I’m quite excited about that and I’m hoping to lose more weight. We will see what happens. I’m just trying to keep up this exercise regimen. However, I didn’t workout today because I’m so tired, but I figured my body needed a small rest. I’m planning on working out tomorrow, so hopefully that is a positive.

One last thing. The past two times I’ve been working in the ARC, people have decided that’s it’s okay to clip their fingernails while their here. First of all, clipping your fingernails is an obnoxious activity that is actually quite loud in a place that is similar to a library. Second of all, it’s not very sanitary in my opinion to be clipping your fingernails and perhaps throwing them away or leaving them whereever you clipped them. Lastly, it’s this an activity that one does in the privacy of their own home. Maybe it’s just me, but it drives me nuts. Ugh.

congrats on donating… that’s a good thing… actually, its close to my industry {smile}

My veins are like that too! Sooo annoying. But then whenever I give blood, everybody is always REALLY nice to me, and they bring me extra juice and let me take more than one cookie.

i’ve always wanted to donate blood, but i’ve never had the chance… 🙁 it’s not like i’m not USED to it–when i had mono i had to get like 4 tubes taken a week, it was ridiculous. haha glad you had fun 🙂

I tried to donate in high school and had too low of iron … my weight was below the minimum during college … I don’t have an excuse not to right now, except that I feel like I’d embarrass myself. That’s probably a very cowardly reason not to do something potentially life saving, isn’t it?

Giving blood is so important-and yours is bound to be great stuff! You lost four pounds!Terrific!

That’s a bit worrying about the after-effects of the blood donation… how much blood do they take? Oh, and well done on the weight loss!

That was a neat little survey thing you did there. And kudos for you for giving blood. I’ve never given blood, I hate to admit… For the same reason, my viens are horrible to find/hit… AND I’m a big wiener when it comes to needles. No one is over poking or proding on me. I just can’t do it!

good for you for donating blood more people need to do that. interesting survey too. i wonder if i should create one. so many of them seem to be written by teenagers.
