Words of wisdom…
Reading a piece about England during WWII, and the author made a rather profound, accurate and timeless statement:
Periodically, the dominant species on the planet goes crazy and does truly depraved and appalling things to its own kind, with the most sophisticated tools at its disposal. Eventually, the madness clears and we all go back to walking the dog, wondering what on earth came over us. It’s like a terrible storm that sweeps across the planet until it exhausts itself. There’s nothing you can do but step back and let it pass.
If I hadn’t gone into medicine, I would have pursued history as a profession. And reading this quote, I thought how beautifully the author encapsulated the breadth of human history. It was always thus, it is like that today, and it will likely be like this until the bitter end.
Einstein said the same, but phrased it differently.
