Just how stupid is Paula Deen?

It’s no secret that I loathe Paula Deen, who shills for that horrible company Smithfield. Now she’s come out of the closet about her Type 2 Diabetes.

When Al Roker repeatedly asked Deen if her diagnosis was a direct result of her butter-rich diet, she admitted that it’s "part of the puzzle" but not the only factor. Citing genetics, lifestyle, diet, stress and age, Deen said that like many baby boomers, "there’s a good chance that [Type 2 Diabetes] will be one of the issues you have to face."

Paula, honey, you’re a morbidly obese cow. I guarantee her BMI is waaay over 30, probably in the 40’s. Of course she has a blood glucose issue! She serves hamburgers between Krispy Kreme doughnuts! Nobody "has" to face this issue if they do the right things.

I love to eat, too, but I’m selective as to what I eat, and I do a brisk walk of 5 miles or more a day. My BMI is 22 as a result, and no issues with blood glucose.

90 percent of people who develop Type 2 diabetes are overweight. And the more belly fat you have, the more likely you are to develop insulin resistance. A particular danger zone is a waist circumference of more than 35 inches for a woman and 40 inches for a man.

Once the diabetic neuropathy kicks in, this will be Paula mowing her lawn:

It’s chilly in Omaha this week, and there was some light snow this morning.  Hiro 88 for dinner tonight.  Tomorrow is The Grey Plume, which is truly something to experience.

Other risk factors include family history, a couch potato lifestyle, age (risk rises significantly after age 45), and ethnicity, with African-Americans and Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian Americans facing a greater threat of the disease. Women who have had gestational diabetes during pregnancy or who have given birth to babies weighing over 9 pounds are also at higher risk.

Funny that a fat person can blame genetics.. Anything to avoid taking responsability I guess.

Sounds like you’re in Omaha a lot. Paula Deen is overweight…she’s certainly not good advertisement for her culinary prowess.

Being a fat person bracketed by two generations of diabetics….

As a Type 1 diabetic, I’ve always watched her program in horror as the calculator in my head tallied fat grams (and the overabundance of carbs!). I noticed she no longer looked pregnant but still has a way to go to be a healthy weight.

being fat is one thing, it doesn’t always result in diabetes. i can personally attest to that. there are just as many thin diabetics as there are fat ones.

I’ve been thinking about this lately, and I actually wanted to ask you about it. I’ve noticed that people frequently think I’m younger than 40. I exercise regularly, I’ve never smoked, I usually eat healthfully, I avoid the sun (but take Vitamin D supplements), and I rarely drink (which I know can be good or bad, but I have rosacea, so I don’t indulge often). As you know, I’m losing weight via Weight Watchers. I’ve lost 107 pounds, and my BMI is in the “overweight” range now rather than “obese.” Yay! My question is, what’s keeping me looking young? My avoidance of the sun and smoking? Or does eating healthy and exercise help a lot, too?

well…she has always aggravated me but, now she’s going to be a shill for a pharmaceutical company and hawk diabetic meds…I wrote this way back in 2009 http://perpetuallyperplexed.squarespace.com/journal/2009/6/3/this-woman-is-trying-to-kill-us.html

I’m not surprised at all by this news. I’ve tried to sit through her programmes a few times and found it impossible. There’s certainly nothing wrong with butter, but always in moderation. I rather like the French idea of food, a bit of the very best and that’s enough.

A couple of years ago my husband was waiting for me at the doctor’s office. Paula Deen’s show was on (or she was on someone else’s show) and when I was done and came back out, Baker B, who pays very little attention to recipes or ingredients or cooking shows, was staring in horror at the TV. He said, “You. WOULD NOT BELIEVE. How much butter that woman just used!!!!!”

I find it strange that the weight wouldn’t be the first thing to blame. I have a pretty good diet, although I do like my chocolate now and then, so I really don’t feel that this is an issue I’ll have to face. Why should it be?

OH good heavens, I’m so the prototype, although I don’t eat much. You’ve scared the living daylights out of me now, but thanks for the information! I’m getting more and more into things, changing. So far I’ve tested negative for diabetes, in fact was diagnosed with the opposite a few years back.

I remember the hamburgers on the Krispy Kreme donuts.
