Egypt

Hi, I just back from Egypt for two days and this trip in fact spend up most of my Easter holidays. Before I have never been to Egypt. To me Egypt is a developing country full of lots of deserts and pyramids which the place is famous for.

I stayed in Egypt for ten days visiting lots of places which most of them are temples for the Egyptian kings to worship the Gods and the sky in the past.  I have been to lots of temples which I can’t really tell which is which, coz they are all yellow like the colour of deserts and they all seem to be the same for me, with paintings and stories on the wall about what the kings did in the past.

I’ve got two impressive feelings for this trip. One is mummification which is the process to preserve the dead bodies of kings. The Egyptians believed in the afterlife – a place where the body and the spirit could live on after death for eternity. For the deceased to reach the afterlife, a proper buried is necessary through the process of mummification.

Before the trip, I have little understanding on mummification but when I came to visit the Egyptian Museum where we can pay for entering the mummy room to see the real dead bodies of the ancient kings, I was shocked for what I’ve seen. You can never believe the ancient kings were lying in front of you. You can see his skeleton, his hair, his fingers and even his teeth, which are so real and terrible. I think mummification is really a big invention and it is also a successful invention to preserve the dead bodies for thousands of years. This understanding gave a big shock to me.

Another feeling I have in this trip is discrimination. There are lots of visitors in Egypt and most of them are western people instead of Asian people. One day when we stayed in a resort built by Germans, we had this feeling. I don’t know how to say but it is my feeling and my impression. I felt the people there didn’t treat us kindly.  I have heard that discrimination can be mostly found in Germans and Spanish coz they think they are the most superior. I don’t know whether it’s true or not. But my friend said Spanish is very nice, maybe it depends on the individuals. I don’t know. But if it’s true, then what’s the point for us to learn a foreign language whose native speakers don’t welcome you? I have this question in my head.

But anyway, this trip is a good experience for me. I can see lots of pyramids, go into the pyramids, and I can visit the tombs of the kings, see the coffins, and I can see lots of temples even though I am not so interested in them. Visiting the tombs and the Egyptian museum are the two most enjoyable and new experience for me.  Next time I would like to travel to Greece, to see different God statues and listen to thousands of Greece stories. I think they will be interesting.

I am curious how far away was Egypt from your home? And did you feel safe there? I’m sorry to hear about the discrimination. And it was very interesting to read about the mummies and the sights you saw!
