I live in small-town Central Maine with my husband of eleven years, my 5yo daughter and 2yo son, two cats and a golden retriever. I am a former hs English teacher, and now teach childbirth education classes, volunteer at my daughter's school and our church, garden, read, try new recipes, and am continually fine-tuning my balancing act of meeting everyone's needs - including my own. We are an AP family, with extended nursing and co-sleeping. We hike, camp, swim, fish, kayak/canoe; enjoy music - my daughter and I both play the violin; and like making things at home, too. We just started homeschooling Oct 2008. Writing this is weird because I feel like by drawing these rough, broad strokes, it makes us sound so wholesome. We're liberals, and we believe in helping others, in small everyday ways and in larger ones when we can: to whom much is given, much is expected. Writing this also certainly highlights the many blessings in my life.

The Smartest Kids in the World?

October 14, 2013
I just finished a very interesting non-fiction book, The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got That Way, by Amanda Ripley.Of the books I've read about education, and why the United State education system is not up to par with other developed countries, this book offers (by far) the most suc...

  • Sun Day Hike Pictures
    October 9, 2013
Like I mentioned earlier, I declared last Wednesday a Sun Day (vs. a Snow Day) and we went hiking. A low-commitment hike, only half an hour away, and not too long either, only about an hour. It was a really fun getaway though, and break from the routine. The weather has finally been lovely (apart ...

I think we should have two Augusts and two Septembers, in exchange for November and March. Halloween could be moved to 2nd September, and Tgiving could be in October. There. Done. Of course, it's the weather that I want changed, not the month names. That's a little trickier. It's been gorgeous her...

It's been kind of a long week - I started teaching my Adult Ed classes, the kids' had their first full week of activities (nothing got cancelled, no one was sick!), and Chris had a tough week with cranky customers and not as many sales etc. as he was hoping for. All four cords of…

    September 23, 2013
Holy cow, friends, did I ever start an uproar on FB that I did not intend! Yesterday was crazy, in that I did not know whether I was going to start my Adult Education English class that evening or not until... 1:30pm, which is just a few hours before class starts. I've taught the class…

  • Update + Camping Photos
    September 18, 2013
So it's official. July was the only month of 2013 that I didn't wear my flannal nightgown.Where's my Indian Summer? I suspose there may be a more politically correct substitute term, but I don't know what it is. Usually there are some warm - even hot - days in September, especially if August is u...

And there it goes... my ability to update. It's a circus here right now, but everyone seems to be handling it fairly well. The hardest thing is trying to fit in all the food prep - I feel like I've been living in my kitchen. All but 5 of the first 40lbs ($20) of beefsteak tomatoes…

Just what every overwhelmed Mama wants - FIFTY POUNDS OF TOMATOES. Hahah!Actually, I am feeling better. We got back from camping early because of the rain. It rained mostly at night - really heavy pounding rain, I was SO thankful our tent kept us dry - though also Saturday afternoon necessitating...

  • August Pictures: Garden, Beach, School
    August 26, 2013
We all did well yesterday. The in-service was as irrelevent to me as I thought it would be (geared for elementary school teachers, not adult educators!), and it was as awkward as I thought it would be (I knew no one), but whatever. It was $60, and I like to think about how to teach…

    August 25, 2013
The adventure (towards insanity?) of School Year 2013-14 begins today. Yes, we unofficially "started" our homeschool year gently, a month ago. But it isn't reallly real until we start adding in all the other commitments and my job. I have a workshop this morning from 8-11. I'm going to leave the ...
