Fear of Falling
Every since I got my first hip replacement in 1979, I have had an intense fear of falling. That fear kind of contributes to the funny way I walk, which in turn probably contributes to the probability that I will fall.
This morning, I went out to walk on the lake path and found one of my neighbors down, being aided by two nice young women who helped her to her feet and assisted her back inside our building. I brought her naughty little dog along. The women told me that my neighbor had apparently had some issue with the dog on her leash and gone over backwards, hitting her head on the sidewalk. She seemed coherent, though badly shaken. She asked me to call the office and tell them that she had fallen. I did as she asked and found out that somebody in our building had already called 911 and sure enough, the ambulance and paramedics were at our door already. I stayed until they took her out on a stretcher. They wanted her to get checked out in the ER. I do hope she is okay.
Because this community I’m living in is made up of seniors, I expect there will be more occasions for me to get involved in these kinds of issues. If I’m the victim, I hope there are people nearby to minister to me, help me home and call for help.
Aloha… Yours… is the true spirit of “Aloha”…! (smiles)

People are all so kind in wanting to help people that have fallen get back up. However, that really is a dangerous thing to do. As a retired 911 Operator, that is one of the most frequent type of call we would get and the first thing we would always tell people is to not try to get the fallen person back up unless they are in danger. Getting them up could result in more injury, especially in caseof a broken hip. The doctor I used to work for told me the same thing. It’s such a natural reaction to want to immediately help them back up. Good for you for helping with the dog!!!

After reading the other two notes, maybe you can be instrumental in getting medical people come and speak to the community if and when they find or come across someone who has fallen or hurt. They can probably give everyone information that will be very helpful, if not for others maybe even for themselves. Glad you could help with the naughty dog. I am so afraid that my dad’s dog will cause him to fall, but he just ignores my concerns. He needs a swat and told to stay down. The dog, not dad. 🙂

I love that you walk, but I’d like to suggest yoga for seniors to increase bone mass (gravity vs. weight bearing poses) and increase strength and sense of balance. There are wonderful DVDs out there for you. Just a thought. I hope your friend is OK. Keep walking!!! 🙂

I haven’t had knee or hip surgery and I am always losing my balance. It is scary. I’ve fallen down my back steps twice and there would be no one to see my if I broke something or knocked myself out. I’m glad you live closer to people.

It’s great to be in a place where you feel others care. It sounds like you’ve picked a good place.

The world is full of more kind, compassionate people that the the other types that we hear about in the news and paper.
